The members of this family are all of the succulent plants which one could sometimes take for Cactacée S. Some are plants buissonnantes or papering like the Carpobrotus , others have a vegetative apparatus reduced to two sheets amalgamated in the shape of split cone, like the Lithops or plant-stones. Other kinds finally show intermediate characteristics. This family is mainly represented in the areas with dry climate of Southern Africa.

It is necessary to associate there 2 kinds ( Tetragonia and Tribulocarpus ) which previously constituted Tetragoniaceae, family of the Tétragone ( Tetragonia expensa ) consumed like vegetable close to the spinach.
