Aixe-on-Vienna
Aixe-on-Vienna ( Aissa in Occitan) is a common French, located in the department of the High-Vienna and the area the Limousin. Its inhabitants is called the Inhabitants of Aix.
Geography
The town of Aixe-on-Vienna is located at the junction of Vienna and Aixette to ten kilometers downstream from Limoges. It is crossed by the R.N.21 which leads to Périgueux.
History
- the site of Aixe-on-Vienna was occupied as of the Gallic time thanks to the presence of a ford on Vienna with the site of the current hamlet of Vienna. The habitat was located at Tarn, undoubtedly with the site of the current cemetery. The Romans included/understood the interest of the site and built a bridge, now disappeared, not far from the Mill of Tarn. At the time mérovingienne, the village of Tarn was set up in parish, the church being dedicated to a companion of saint Martial, holy Alpinien, always venerated at the time of Ostensions.
- In 982, a " castrum of Axa " is attested on the rocky outcrop dominating the junction of Aixette and Vienna. The stronghold concerned the abbey of Solignac but in XIIIe century, the site became a dependence of the Viscounts of Limoges. At this same time, a bridge crossing Vienna and another, Aixette (bridge of Malassert) are built by the Viscounts of Limoges. Thus Aixe replaced Tarn which did not make that declined. But it is only with the French revolution that Aixe became chief town of commune and the church Holy-Cross, seat of the parish.
- the city developed with XIXe and XXe century thanks to the industry of the treatment of the kaolin, the porcelain and the shoe. It is at that time that the city developed on Right Bank of Vienna. Today, Aixe-on-Vienna is a small city which suffered from the closing of the factories of shoes, and whose image is tarnished by the recurring passage of the cars and the trucks.

Places and monuments
- Vault Notre-Dame d' Arliquet (19th century): it was built out of bricks and limestone to replace an older vault. It shelters a piéta of XVIe century, venerated every 7 years at the time of Ostensions. Around this vault, develops a way of cross and a cave of " the agonie" , making of Arliquet, small the Doors of the Limousin. The park very damages at the time of the storm of 1999 was the object since 2003 of a restoration, located from and of other of the river of Aurence, it is a place full with charm, favourable with calm and the reflection.
- Vault Midsummer's Day (13th century): rising in the center of the cemetery of the city, it presents a beautiful Gothic arch the Limousin. It is the old funerary vault of the cemetery of the parish of Tarn which amalgamated with Aixe with the Revolution.
- Church Holy-Cross (13th century): according to the tradition, it would have been built to shelter a fragment of the True Cross which a pilgrim reported of Holy Land. It was strongly altered at the XIXe century; it preserves nevertheless a beautiful Gothic gate of Limousin style and a beautiful collection of reliquaries.
- Bridge of Malassert (14th century): this single arch called traditionally the Roman bridge is the single vestige of a formed bridge of at least two arches on which planks of wood were posed.
- ruins of the castle or tower Jeanne d' Albret: on the rocky outcrop overhanging with the junction of Aixette and Vienna, the vestiges of the castle of Aixe rise, large fortress of the Viscount of Limoges.
