Aithirne Ailgesach

Aithirne Ailgesach , in the Irish Celtic Mythology, is a despotic Druide, whose nickname ailgesach means “the Demanding one”. It appears in several accounts of the Cycle of Ulster , of which the Courtise of Luaine and the Siège of Howth . It has two wire, Cuingedach (“Envieux”) and Apartach (“the Sarcastic one”).

Aithirne Ailgesach is the prototype even of the canted druid, considered to require impossible things and which is avenged while making use of its magic, in particular of the satire mortal of the Glam dicinn.

Of all his extravagances, one can retain that it requires of the one-eyed king Eochaid Mac Luchta, of the Connaught, that it gives his valid eye to him; with Tigerna Tetbuillech, king of Munster, it wants to sleep with his wife, even request with Mesgegra in connection with the Buân queen. It requires warriors of the Leinster that they offer a jewel of great value to him. It is responsible for the battle of Dun Etair: having spent a whole year of Raid to capture queens (“ three times fifty ”), it is besieged with Ulates (inhabitants of Ulster) in the fortress by the warriors of Leinster. Its most serious fixed price, which will be fatal for him, is the curse of prone Luaine of the account “ Tochmarc Luaine ” ( Courtise of Luaine ). Whereas she is promised to the king Conchobar Mac Nessa, the druid and his two sons want that she sleeps with them, in front of his refusal he pronounces a Glam dicinn which makes die the young girl. The revenge on Conchobar is relentless, it levels the fortress of Dun Etair, keep silent the druid and all his family.
