Airspeed Ltd

Airspeed Ltd is an aeronautical manufacturer of the United Kingdom appeared in the years 1930 and absorbed by the firm De Havilland with beginning of the year 50.

The company was created with York in 1931 by has Hessell Tiltman and Neville Shute Norway. Repurchased in 1933 by Swan Hunter it became Airspeed (1934) Ltd after transfer of its activities to Portsmouth. The day before the Second world war Airspeed produced twin-engines of light transport. The Airspeed AS.6 Envoy became a plane of general-purpose drive of RAF under designation Airspeed AS.10 Oxford. In June 1940 the shares of Swan Hunter were bought by De Havilland Aircraft Company, the firm finding its name of Airspeed Ltd in January 1944. During the conflict Airspeed contributed in a considerable way to the effort of war with the sailplane of load Horsa. It is to ensure the production of this sailplane and the twin-engine of drive Oxford intended for the Empire Air Training Design that a new factory to Christchurch was open.

De Havilland became majority shareholder in 1948, the fusion between Airspeed and of Havilland announced in June 1951, leading to the formation of Airspeed Division off De Havilland . But the productions Airspeed hardly had success post-war period, only the Ambassador being bought in minor amount by British European Airways ( BEA ) and being exploited under the name of Elizabethan .
