Airport of Milan Malpensa
The airport of Milan Malpensa (in Italian, Aeroporto internazionale di Milano Malpensa (Code AITA: MXP ; Code ICAO: LIMC ) is one of both Italian platforms of correspondence and the second Italian airport , after the airport of Rome Fiumicino. It is located in the Province of Varèse, on the communes of Gallarate, Somma Lombardo, Casorate Sempione, Samarate, Ferno and Vizzola Ticino.
Belonging to the European great projects of transport, it is supposed to replace that of Linate, from now on reserved for the interior flights, like platform of principal correspondence.
It is managed by SEA , a company of mixed economy belonging essentially to the town hall of Milan and the province of the same name.
History
In 1909, the industrialists Giovanni Agusta and Gianni Caproni had created close to the farm " cascina Malpensa" an airfield to make steal their prototypes. With the addition of military structures, the field developed and became also a flying school. After the Second world war, certain industrialists of Busto Arsizio, near of the aerodrome, engaged in its reabilitation and assumed management in the objective of it to make of it a node of development for the industry of the north of Milan. In 1948, the civil traffic is officially open; the airport becomes Aeroporto " then; Città di Busto Arsizio" . A little later the commune of Milan entered the capital of the Società Aeroporto di Busto until taking control of it. In 1955, the commune of Milan and the Province of Milan were definitively implied in the management of the airport and into Società Esercizi Aeroportuali - S.E.A transformed it.In 1960, the national and European flights are transferred to the Aéroport of Milan Linate, reducing Malpensa to the statute of aeroporto intercontinental di Milano E LED northern Italia . The structure developed at that time corresponds substantially to Terminal 2 current.
The second phase of development ( progetto Malpensa 2000 ) is that which led the construction of new the air terminal, Terminal 1, inaugurated in 1998.
An important point of the history of the airport is its positioning inside a natural park ( Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino ), aspect which empéché and prevents always the development of the tracks (third track) and the corresponding infrastructures.
The airport
With approximately 22 million passengers in 2006, Milano Malpensa is placed in second position of the Italian airports after the Airport of Rome Fiumicino. The first two Italian airports (Fiumicino and Malpensa) absordent more than 42% of the passengers of the 37 Italian stopovers and more 50% being international flights.It is on the other hand the first airport concerning the international traffic (approximately 19 million passengers in 2006) and freight (420 000 tons, 44% of the Italian total).
Terminals
The airport consists of two distinct terminals: the Final 1 dedicated to all the intercontinental, international and national flights, whereas the Terminal 2 is dedicated exclusively to the flights charter and the airline companies at low prices.Terminal 1, inaugurated in 1998, is in its turn made up of two satellites: satellite has - flights towards the destinations of the zone " Schengen" ; satellite B - flights towards the destinations of the zone " Except Schengen". A new hall of recording and the third satellite (C) is currently in construction (hall planned for 2008, satellite C for 2010).
The railway station annexed to Terminal 1 allows a direct connection with the station of Milano-Cadorna with trains every 30 minutes.
Terminal 2 is old the air terminal of Malpensa builds in the Sixties and increased in the Nineties.
The two terminals are connected by a shuttle.
The flights cargo liner have a large specific terminal, called " CargoCity ".
Tracks
The airport of Malpensa is equipped with two parallel, long tracks of approximately 4 kilometers, directed with 349° (or 169°, according to the direction of use); the 17L, 35L and 35R are equipped with the THEY, and all have the system PAPI. Normally, the two tracks are used with an orientation with 349° (in an alternative way for the departures and the arrivals), whereas the 17 are active only in the event of particularly unfavourable wind.
