After being itself developed until 2000, it undergoes the by-effect of the competition of TGV on the axis Marseilles-Paris (3 H for the non-stop trains), of the deceleration of the world air traffic after the 11 September 2001 and of the bankruptcy of several operators like AOM, Air Freedom, Sabena or Swissair.

Since 1934, the Chamber of commerce and of industry Marseilles-Provence is manager of the Aéroport. In 1987, the State renewed the concession for thirty years. Since 1980, CCI Marseilles Provence manages the civil zone of the aerodrome of Aix-en-Provence.
