Airport of Edinburgh

The airport of Edinburgh , located at 13 km of the center town of Edinburgh in Scotland, is the sixth most important Aéroport of the the United Kingdom. It managed by BAA plc, which also manages the airports of Heathrow, of Gatwick, of Stansted, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton.

The current airport and work of extension

The current terminal, drawn by Robert Matthew, was built in 1977 and underwent important work these last years, with the construction of a new carpark and the enlarging of the hall of arrivals. An extension of the terminal is égalemement being studied. Six doors and a new pier will be added to the east of a current terminal. These new installations should be brought into service at the summer 2006. A news control tower also was inaugurated in 2005. The airport currently has two tracks but the construction of third is being studied. However, it should not be born before 2030.

The Scottish government announced in 2003 a project of rail link for the airport of Edinburgh. This new line will be connected to the line Edinburgh - Glasgow and would make it possible to directly connect the airport to the station of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dunblane, Fife, Aberdeen and Inverness. This project, if it is carried out, should cost 500 million £ and be born into 2010/2011. A project of Tramway also exists to connect the airport to the center town in 2009. Currently, this connection is ensured by a service of bus express train.

Accidents

The February 27th 2001, a plane Shorts 360 of the airline company Loganair, operated by the Royal Mail bound for Belfast, was crushed in the Firth off Forth to have taken off Edinburgh to 17:30 shortly after. The plane did not transport passengers but all the team members died. The investigation established that the accident was due to the snow drift in the engines of the plane. Protections had not been well fixed on the air intake of the engines whereas the apparatus had remained stationed several hours under an abundant snow in Edinburgh.
