Air base 136 Toul-Rosières

Located in the steps of Lorraine, Department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and being next to the small village of the Rosières-in-Hague (), with about fifteen kilometers of the town of Toul, the air base 136 of the French Air force (code ICAO: LFSL), resulting from that initially established with Bremgarten, occupies since September 15th, 1967 the site of the old platform of USAFE built in 1952 with the title of the Organization of the treaty of the North Atlantic known under the name of Toul-Rosières Air Bases (TRAB). This platform occupies a surface of 600 hectares and a perimeter of 14 kilometers.

Name of baptème

Air base 136 carries, since October 7th, 1988, the name of Colonel Phelut , deceased on March 18th, 1981 in air service, during the operations " Airex-Datex.81".

Air units stationed

As for its base mother (Bremgarten), this platform supports the 11th Squadron of Hunting with three of its four squadrons of huntings, the Roussillon , the the Vosges and the Corsica .

The fourth squadron (Squadron of hunting 4/11 the Jura), after a stay with Air base 188 Djibouti will be assigned to Bordeaux-Mérignac until his dissolution in 1992.

History

Second world war

From the December 9th, 1944, the 9th Air Force installs the P-51 and P-47 of the 358th, 50th and 27th Fighter Group on what will become several years ares Toul-Rosières Air Bases. The ground, called " Rosy" is indicated by a98 code and is equipped with a track in PSP ( Pierced Steel Planking , steel plates perforated) of 1500 meters. Toul Air Base is returned to the French authorities the May 8th, 1945.

USAF

In 1951, the Soviet threat increasing in Europe, NATO decides the construction of many modern air bases in Germany and France. The ground of Toul-Rosières is selected for the construction of a base for USAFE, in particular because of the American long story in this place.

The construction of the new base is planned in two phases. The first consists of the construction of a temporary base as soon as possible to base there flying units of the USAFE. The construction of modern infrastructures is then envisaged in a second phase, carried out by the architects Pierre Dufau and Grad Seelye.

Work begins in February 1951 with the installation one to see shoed for the supply of the base is also installation. The old track in PSP is replaced in November 1951 by a concreted track.

The 7412th Support Squadron is activated in Toul-Rosières in December 1951 for the coordination of the building work of the new base.

117th Tactical Wing Recognition

The 117th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing leaves its base of Lawson AFB in Georgia to settle in Toul on January 27th, 1952. 117th TRW is composed of three squadrons: 160th TRS of the National guard of the Alabama, 157th TRS of the National guard of the South Carolina and 112th TRS of the National guard of the Ohio. 112th TRS is equipped with 15 RB-26C while the 157th and 160th TRS fly on 38 RF-80A. Each squadron also has a T-33A of connection and drive. The RB-26 are used for the night reconnaissance missions while the RF-80 are limited to the missions of day.

When 117th TRW arrives at TRAB (nickname given to the base), the base is a true mud field. As the commander of the wing, considering the situation dangerous for the air operations, decides to transfer the flying squadrons towards other bases in West Germany, while waiting for as the base of TRAB is finished. 157th TRS settles with Fürstenfeldbruck Air Bases and 160th TRS with Neubiberg Air Bases. The units of command and support of the 117th remain in Toul. 112th TRS as for him leaves with its RB-26 for Wiesbaden Air Bases where there remains until July 1952, date of its return, for little time, to TRAB.

Indeed, the 117th TRW, unit of the National guard is withdrawn from the active service on July 9th, 1952.

10th Tactical Wing Recognition

The 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing is activated in Toul-Rosières AB on July 10th, 1952. It absorbs the materials and personnel of late 117th TRW. 112th TRS becomes the 1st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 157th TRS the 32nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron and 160th TRS the 38th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. The 32nd and 38th TRS remain with their RF-80 with Furstenfeldbruck and Neubiberg.

10th TRW takes again the missions of 117th TRW and regularly deploys its apparatuses under the sunny sky of the Morocco.

Following the one of the many reorganizations of the USAFE, 10th TRW is transferred to Spangdahlem Air Bases in Germany. The 7412th Support Squadron is activated to ensure the maintenance of the base of TRAB. Units of genius of the US Army are also installed on the base to finish, with French companies, the construction of the base.

465th Troop Wing Carrier

The 465th Troop Carrier Wing which was activated with Donaldson Air Force Bases in February 1953, settles in Toul-Rosières in November 1953 with its three squadrons: 780th, 781st and 782nd Troop Squadrons Carrier. The 465th TCW which is affected with the 12th Air Force and attached to the 322nd Air Division (Combat Cargo liner), flies on 56 C-119 C plus some C-47 and L-20A of support.

Work on the basis of Toul not being finished, on their arrival in Europe, the squadrons is temporarily based in Germany: the 780th is with Rhein-Hand Air Bases, the 781st with Wiesbaden Air Bases and the 782nd with Neubiberg Air Bases. They settle finally with TRAB in April - May 1954.

465th TCW leaves Toul definitively on May 23rd, 1955 to take its districts with Evreux-Fauville Air Bases.

The 7430th Air Bases Squadron is then activated to deal with the base of Toul which is deactivation. The 7430th ABS has C-47 and a L-20A Beaver.

312th/366th FBW

Between 1954 and 1955, F-86H Saber 366th Fighter Bomber Wing Alexandria Air Force Bases in Louisiana and of the 312th Fighter Bomber Wing of Clovis Air Force Bases with the New Mexico carry out rotations on the basis of Toul-Rosières. The Lieutenant-colonel John B. England, ordering 389th FBS of 366th FBW kills himself in the crash landing out of his F-86H in wood close relations out of the base out of Toul at the time of the one of these deployments. 50th Fighter To bend Wing/Tactical Fighter Wing

The 50th Fighter-To bend Wing leaves its base of Hahn Air Bases on July 17th, 1956 to take possession of the installations of the base of Toul-Rosières. The 10th, 81st and 417th Fighter Bomber Wing which composes 50th FBW are equipped with 74 traditional F-86H Saber supplemented C-47, L-20A and T-33A of support.

50th FBW has like main mission the tactical nuclear attack.

As from May 1957, F-86 are replaced by 75 F-100D/F Super Sabers.

In 1959, the French government asks for the withdrawal of the French soil of all the vectors and foreign nuclear weapons, the 50th, which was renamed 50th Tactical Fighter Wing must leave France. Free 50th TFW TRAB on December 10th, 1960 to turn over to Hahn AB.

The 7514th Support Group is activated at the beginning of 50th TFW to ensure the guard of the base of Toul like those of Chambley, Chaumont, Etain and Phalsbourg. The 7514th becomes the 7544th Support Group on January 1st, 1960.

Detachment 1,10th Tactical Wing Recognition

October 10th, 1959, the 32nd and 38th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadrons pertaining to 10th TRW of RAF Alconbury are assigned to the base of Toul to form Detachment 1,10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing.

The RB-66C of the 32nd and 38th TRS based with RAF Alconbury, RAF Bruntingthorpe and RAF Chelveston carry out rotations from 2 to 4 months with Toul.

The apparatuses of the 1st, 19th TRS unite those of the two other squadrons in rotations which last until October 1965 and the activation of the 25th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (to which 19th TRS is attached) in Chambley AB and of the 26th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing in Toul.

The Crisis of Berlin

In the night from August 12th to 13rd 1961, East Germany builds the Mur which will separate Berlin during thirty years. In reaction, NATO reinforces its forces in Europe. October 1st, 1961, the 131st Tactical Fighter Wing is deployed in Toul-Rosières to become the 7131st Tactical Fighter Wing (Provisional). It is consisted of the 110th TFS of Lambert Field (Missouri), 169th TFS of Peoria Municipal Airport (Illinois) and 170th TFS of Capitol Airport to Springfield (Illinois). Only 131st TFS is deployed in Toul, supplemented of two other squadrons of other Wings. 78 F-84F equip 7131st TFW (P).

7131st TFW leaves Toul on July 19th, 1962.

26th Tactical Wing Recognition

July 1st, 1965, the 26th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing is activated on the basis of Toul, involving the dissolution of the 7544th Support Group. 26th TRW is formed of 22nd TRS, based before with RAF Alconbury on RB-66, and of 32nd TRS coming with its RF-101C from 66th TRW from Laon-Couvron Air Bases.

From the October 3rd, 1965, the RB-66 and RF-101 are replaced by RF-4C Phantom II. A third squadron, 38th TRS, joined 26th TRW in Toul on January 1st, 1966.

March 7th, 1966, Charles de Gaulle announces the withdrawal of France of the integrated Command of NATO and requires the departure of all the foreign armed forces of the French territory. 26th TRW is dissolved in Toul on October 5th, 1966 and redeployed with the 38th and 32nd TRS with Ramstein Air Bases. 22nd TRS is him affected with Mountain Home in the Idaho.

The 7544th Support Group is reactivated to operate the closing of the base of TRAB. The last Americans leave TRAB on April 1st, 1967, returning the base with the French authorities.

The Air force
