Air Malted

Air Malted (Code AITA: km , Code ICAO: AMC ) is the national Airline company of Malta. It serves 36 destinations in Europe and North Africa since its hub of Luqa.

History

Whereas Malta is a British colony , its inhabitants travel by sea or on foreign airline companies (mainly British). But, once proclaimed independence, the new government decides to create its own established company the March 21st 1973 by a resolution of the Chambre of the representatives.

The first flight takes place on April 1st 1974 with 2 Boeing 720 serving Rome, Tripoli, London, Manchester, Frankfurt and Paris.

In 1982, Air Malted acquires 3 new Boeing 737 which are delivered in 1983. In 1986 Air Malted acquires 2 new 737 and, in 1987, order its first Airbus A320. 2 Boeing 720 are then sold. In 1989, Air Malted place an option for additional A320 and, in 1992, 2 additional Boeing 737 are ordered. This year there, 4 Avro RJ 70 are ordered to serve the Catalogne and Palermo like Tunis and Monastir.

After the opening of new the International airport of Malta in 1992, Air Malted creates CargoSystems which includes the transport of Fret on its flights. In 1994, Air Malted inaugurates its center of freight. The company employs 1763 people and is held by the Maltese government (98%) and of the private investors (2%). It also has 25% of the company Medavia. The June 9th 1997, flight km 830 is diverted by 2 Turks.

In July 2002, Air Malted advertisement which its new fleet would be made up of Airbus A319 and A320. The last plane must be delivered in 2007. In 2004, Air Malted joined with a certain success the sector of the flights low-cost.

According to the review of the Association of the European airline companies (May 2006), Air Malted is the company which loses less luggage in Europe (4,1 per 1000 passengers).
