The history of Air France is presented on the site Air France: the saga

History

August 1st Air-France was founded the August 31st 1933 by the fusion of 4 principal companies of French air transport: Air the East, Air Union, C.I.D.N.A. and S.G.T.A. Farman, in the form of a Public limit company with the capital of 120 million frankly S in which the State held at least 25% of the actions and would be represented with the Board of directors in the same proportions. This company repurchased the credits of the Aéropostale, at the time in compulsory liquidation. The October 7th 1933, a ceremony with the Le Bourget devoted the new company which chaired Mr. Roume, former president d' Air the East, and before general governor of Indo-China and Africa Occidentale French. In the beginning, it like symbol winged Hippocampe had affectionately called a the shrimp by the personnel. This emblême was that of Air the East. The June 26th 1945 the shortly after the Second world war, the Civil aviation French was nationalized and Air France becomes state-owned property then. The January 12th 1990, the State buys with the group Chargeurs SA of Jerome Seydoux the near total of the capital of the private company ATU which is in fact nationalized. Airline companies belonging to the French government, i.e. Air France, Air Inter, Air Charter and ATU are joined together within the Groupe Air France but preserve temporarily their autonomy. A new company, Group Air France , is created by decree the July 25th 1994, which came into effect the next on September 1st. This company held the majority of the shares of the capital of Air France and Air Inter renamed Air France Europe . The February 10th 1999, Air France is the subject of a partial privatization.
Le group (Air France-KLM) which it forms from now on with KLM since the May 3rd 2004 makes of it a company privatized even if the French State still holds big parts within the capital. Sources: Museum Air France and historical files of Air France

Alliances

Air France is founding member of alliance SkyTeam with Delta Air Lines, Aeromexico and Korean Air since the year 2000.

Alliance with KLM

The bringing together Air France-KLM led to the creation of the first European group of air transport. The success of the public offering of exchange on KLM allows the new group, founded on the concept a group, two companies, three trades , to engage its strategy quickly. Three levels of priorities were released:

  • continuation of the control of the costs for each company,
  • the implementation of synergies,
  • the development of alliance SkyTeam with the simultaneous entry of KLM, Northwest Airlines and Continental Airlines (initially partners of KLM)
End November 2004, Jean-Cyril Spinetta, chairman of the group, and Leo Van Wijk, vice-president of the group and chairman of KLM, presented semi-annual benefit (from May to September, fusion having been concretized only starting from this date) of 296 million Euro S is a rise of 56,6% compared to the preceding exercise. The programmes of development of consumer loyalty of Air France (Frequency More) and KLM (Flying Dutchman) were amalgamated in a single program, baptized Flying Blue, as from the June 6th 2005.

Alliance with Alitalia

Following a Franco-Italian government seminar, the revival of the process of alliance between the Air France group and Alitalia were confirmed. “ Alitalia has its problems to solve and will solve we them ”, declared Silvio Berlusconi, and then one will move towards the integration to create a single Franco-Italian company, which was confirmed by Jean-Pierre Raffarin. As of this advertisement, the actions of Alitalia flew away. The managing director, Giancarlo Cimoli confirmed these remarks in margin of the top: “ once the company will have a more positive situation from a countable point of view, it will be worth more and it will support alliance with KLM and Air France ”.

Alitalia and Air France is already bound by a trade agreement since 2001; agreement reinforced by an exchange of actions in 2003 bearing out of 2% of the capital and the presence of the two presidents in the respective boards of directors. But fusion was deferred while that with KLM was carried out in September 2004. This trade agreement in particular envisages to develop a beam of correspondences, centered on the Aéroports of Roissy-Charles-of-Gaulle, Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino and the development of the Partage of code for the intercontinental Europe and flights.

For the connections between the Italy and the France, the companies operate in joint venture (as only one company) There are currently 582 weekly flights of which 30,6% only are ensured by Alitalia, which makes react Giancarlo Cimoli which recently wished that this division be balanced better.

In November 2005, Air France announced that it subscribed to the capital growth of Alitalia for December 2005 in order to always have 2% of the capital at the conclusion of the transaction.

In June 2006, Jean-Cyril Spinetta has declared that the ultimate goal of the partnership with Alitalia was fusion, which would lead to an uncontested primatie European, with a total fleet of more than 650 planes (by taking of account regional subsidiary companies)

Does at the end of 2006, the idea of a fusion with Alitalia seem abandoned, in spite of adventures and one (next?) privatization of the latter which enlise.

Industrial assets and platform of correspondence (ear) of the airport Roissy-Charles de Gaulle

It is generally considered that one of the largest assets of Air France is its establishment with the Aéroport Roissy-Charles de Gaulle (its main thing ear) which has the advantage of having a strong potential of extension (it is surrounded by rural areas). Its surface is currently of 3200 hectares, that is to say approximately 3 times more than the majority of the large European airports. Air France currently established its ear with terminal 2 of the Aéroport Roissy-Charles de Gaulle. With the enlarging of the current terminal and the nearest opening of the S3 Satellite in 2007, then S4 Satellite in 2010, Air France will gradually give up the first part of the terminal, i.e. the terminals 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D to concentrate on 2nd, 2F, 2G (future regional air terminal), S3, and S4 which will offer to him an annual capacity of 40 million passengers. That will push Roissy to have a full capacity of approximately 72 million passengers. The ultimate project is T4, project of terminal in North to accommodate 30 million passengers.

The fleet

detailed Fleet of Air France

Policy of fleet

At July 31st, 2007, Air France exploits 380 Avion S which it distributes on its fleets long-distance carrier, middle-distance carrier and regional.

A policy of fleet which the company regards as effective makes it possible to rationalize and modernize the fleet with the advantages which are dependant there:

  • reduction of consumption,
  • reduction of the costs,
  • reduction of the harmful effects.
Nearly the three quarters of the capital spending program the 5 next years will be devoted to this rationalization and modernization. They are in particular to limit the number of models planes used, in a preoccupation of profitability and a greater flexibility of programming.

Long-distance carrier

The success of the Platform of correspondence of the Airport Roissy-Charles de Gaulle 2 and the developmental perspectives which accompany it, direct the choices of the company towards long-distance apparatuses with very long operating range. The fleet length mail of Air France has a 6,6 years Middle Age (except airfreighters). For a long time, it exploited number of Boeing 747 of which it currently replaces the old models by Boeing 777 (example of the 777-300ER for the DOM-TOM) and in the future, by Airbus A380.

The French company is one of the rare owners to hold at the same time Airbus A330-200, A340-300X and of Boeing 777-200ER, the first being used with the 747 on the tourist destinations while the seconds are devoted to the connections with customers businesses. This specialization increased during the refittings with the new cabins, arranged in 2003, for A330/340 and 747, in version Bi-classes.

Air France is the main customers of launching of Boeing 777-300ER, brought into service in May 2004 and initially ordered to replace Boeing 747-400.

The last 747-200 and 747-300 exploited on the network Indian Caribbean-Ocean were thus replaced by 777-300ER (47) with high density (472 seats), whose first flight on these lines was accomplished on June 12th, 2006 in direction of the Guadeloupe to the Aéroport of Raizet to Point-with-Clown. The deployment was then carried out on the Meeting since January 24th, 2007. The last apparatus intended for overseas was delivered in June 2007 and serves the French Guiana.

The Airbus A330-200 (16) replaced A310 and 767-300ER on the destinations long-distance carrier with less traffic and on the openings of line as from December 2001. The version exploited by Air France (MTOW 233,010 tons) is equipped with an increased operating range making it possible to join the west coast of the United States.

Middle-distance carrier

For the middle-distance flights, Air France privileges all the same Airbus with its many apparatuses of the family A320 of which it is the only airline company in the world to have all the alternatives: A318 (18), A319 (46), A320 (68) and A321 (15). The Boeing 737 disappeared from the fleet of Air France to the profit of the models of Airbus on June 11th, 2007 with the last flight of a Boeing 737 registered F-GJND between Paris Charles de Gaulle and Turin.

Cargo liner

Air France took delivery of its first Boeing 747-200F in October 1974 (registered NR 18815 then F-BPVO the 4/20/82), baptized " Super-Pélican" in reference to the 707-328C " Pélicain". Seven other machines will follow (F-BPVR, VV, F-GCBE, BG then BK, BL and BM with increased MTOW). The integration of ATU will bring two additional apparatuses (F-GBOX and F-GPAN, destroyed by fire in Madras in March 1999).

Air France was again the customer of launching of a version freight of the Jumbo Jet by ordering 747-428ERF in March 2001 in order to replace its -228F growing old. This version with operating range improved in particular allowed to remove the technical stopover of Tachkent on the lines towards the Southeast Asia.

Cargo Air France will take delivery of Boeing 777 -200LRF starting from 2008, version which it will be the first company to be exploited. In parallel, 3 current Boeing 747-400 in version passengers are designed to be converted into version freight (B747-400BCF) as of 2007.

Current fleet

The Middle Age of the fleet of Air France is 8,9 years to July 31st, 2007.

Franchized companies

Frankness (definition): “the franchized company ensures the management of its flights, exploits them under its financial responsibility and pays a royalty with Air France. The flights are marketed under the code AF (and not under code IATA of the franchized company). ”

In return, the strategy of Air France meets the needs for the regional companies by:

- reinforcement of their marketing policy, thanks to the power of marketing and with the network of a company such as Air France,
- the possibility of offering to their passengers a greater number of destinations within the framework of a structured and coherent network, while profiting from a chain from services homogeneous,
- the access to a very gravitational programme of development of consumer loyalty for their customers.

Air France developed partnership agreements and majority takeovers in regional companies. The regional pole is organized around the companies acquired in 2000:

- Brit Air, based with Morlaix
- CityJet, Irish company based in Dublin which connects Paris/Orly & Charles-of-Gaulle, Dublin and London City Airport (LCY), as well as a big number of destinations at the beginning of Paris-CDG and other French airports.
- Regional, resulting from the fusion of Regional Airlines, Flanders Air and Proteus.
This pole had at September 30th, 2006 of a fleet of 127 planes of less than 100 seats. These conveyers, all subsidiary companies of Air France, as well as the CCM Airlines (ex Corsica Compagnie the Mediterranean) and, until 2004, the British British European), are franknesses. The advantages Flying Blue apply to all the flights franknesses.
  • Brit Air (Code IATA dB)
  • Regional (Code IATA YS)
  • CityJet (Code IATA WX)
  • CCM Airlines (Code IATA XK, for the service road of the Corsica especially)
