Air-traffic controller
A air-traffic controller is a person charged to ensure the safety of the air traffic.
Formation
The French formation of the air-traffic controllers is followed to the National school of the civil aviation (ENAC) with Toulouse.
It is a public formation which lasts three years (except in the event of prolongation of the formation). It is sanctioned by a diploma for the occupation of “Engineer of the Control of the Aerial navigation” - ICNA - (administrative name of the profession, titrates of engineer not recognized by the commission of the titles). During initial training, after one 18 months duration, the ICNA is affected, either in Control tower, or in Center on the way of the aerial navigation (CRNA).
The selection of the ICNA takes place at the time of an annual national competition, opened to the citizens French, old from 18 to 26 years, physically suited and being able to justify of one 2nd year of scientific preparatory classes (or 2nd year of integrated preparatory classes), or to be titular (before November 1st) one of the following diplomas: DEUG, HAD, BTS in scientific or technological matter, DEUST.
Role
The first role of the air-traffic controller is to separate the planes, and the other flying equipments (the unit being called Aéronef S). Standards of spacing are established and the controller must make sure that these standards are respected at every moment. He also helps to flux and organize the circulation of the aircraft in the sky, but also on the ground on the Aéroport S. For that, he can look at directly outside (out of control tower, also called watchtower) or use his screen Radar (in center of approach or CRNA).
