Ailly-the-High-bell-tower

Ailly-the-High-Bell-tower is a common French, located in the department of the Somme and the area Picardy.

Its inhabitants is called the Aliacois or the Aliaciens .

Geography

Ailly-the-High-Bell-tower , which belongs to the area of the Ponthieu, is a commune located on a vast plate. There does not exist that a light undulation of ground towards the east.

The toponym Ailly comes from the farm of “Alius”, closes Gallo-Roman which was on the level of the current cemetery, on the trunk road and which one sees traces on the air photographs. In the name of the locality the mention of a high bell-tower was added, because of the characteristic of formerly of the arrow of the church which was used as observatory to the academicians charged to draw up the chart of France of Cassini in 1760.

Ailly (“ Asliacum ”, noted successively also “ Alliacus ”, “ Aliacus ”, “ Ale ”) is of old origin. Stone axes, stone coffins containing of the skeletons and the medals, found between Ailly and Famechon, with the locality the Three Cities make accept the existence in this place of a cemetery Gallo-Roman.

In 831, Ailly belonged to the abbey of Saint-Riquier. Four Fief S were created in Ailly: one held by Nicolas Deroussen, another by Jean Maye, a third held by J. Belleborgue and also one by François de Bacouel. The stronghold of Famechon was held by Bernard and that of Alliel by J. Fuzelier.

In 1500, Catherine de Fosseux, marries of Robert d' Ococh, sold Ailly with Jose de Beauvarlet, Maïeur of Abbeville.
In 1546, the church of Ailly was set fire to by scélérats : 130 inhabitants who had taken refuge there perished. The chief of the flamers was burned with Abbeville the July 16th 1546.

In 1556 was built the arrow of Ailly by François Glassant, carpenter.

In 1590, the hamlet of Famechon sheltered a garrison of members of a league.

In 1615, Ailly is devastated by the troops of the Maréchal of Anchor (which died assassinated the April 25th 1617).

  • December 1626, " day before Christmas " : Three bells were molten by 2 founders abbevillois ( Anthoyne SIFAICT and… CLUB) and 2 founders Lorraine (Nicolas EPAULARD and Joham …). They will be bénites on January 21st 1627, day of Co.-Agnes, by François MITHON, priest. " Instead of the lords " , the respective godfathers and godmothers will be:

- for the grosse (baptized Francoise), Pierre DEROUSSEN (wire of Vallerand of ROUSSEN) and Francoise of ROUSSEN (girl of Claude of ROUSSEN, postmaster of Ailly)
- for the moyenne (baptized Marie), Abel BELLARD (wire of Anthoine BELLARD, cartwright) and Marguerite BELLARD (girl of François BELLARD, marshal)
- for the petite (baptized Johanne),… SERSELIN (wire of fire Johan SERSELIN) and Francoise (girl of François SERPELIN)

In 1639, Ailly is plundered by the French troops of the marshal of Meilleraye.

In 1651, took place a combat with the riders of the tax department of Abbeville, which were beaten.

  • September 1849: Victor Hugo is of passage in the borough. It announces " to it; few Cholera ".
  • the common one was devastated by the Grêle in 1885.

Places and monuments

  • Church Notre-Dame of the Assumption : Classified historic building, it dates from XIIIe century. The arrow of its bell-tower was used at the XVIIIe century with measurements contributing to the establishment of the Carte as Cassini. For several years, it has been the object of animations at the time of the European Journées of the inheritance. A Sundial, which equipped formerly the southern face with the building, is still a little visible under favorable conditions (low-angled light of sunny end-of-day).
  • War memorial: Set up at side (southern side) of the church, it is surrounded by 4 shells which has the effect of letting exceed ground only their higher end, deprived of their Ogive.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Pierre d' Ailly, bishop of Cambric, cardinal of Rome was native of Ailly. References and sources requested
  • Jean-Baptiste Honore Deroussen, lawyer at the Parliament (1748 - 1804).
  • Ernest Deroussen, grandson of the precedent, officer to the 2nd acrobat of the Guard, killed with the attack of the Turn Malakoff with Sébastopol, decorated with the Legion of Honor one month front for a brilliant deed and carried to the day order of the army.

Equipment and economic life

The borough has of an elementary school and a college and is equipped with sporting infrastructures.

This rural district is on the road axis Abbeville/Amiens, which supports employment out of the communal territory. Until in the years 1930, a factory of clothes industry of mother-of-pearl buttons employed Alliciens. From now on, the economic life was reduced to two endive producers, agriculture and some craftsmen.
