Aidit

Dipa Nusantara Aidit , more known like D.N. Aidit (July 30th, 1923 - November 22nd, 1965), was one of the principal leaders of the Communist party indonésien (PKI). Born under the name of Ahmad Aidit in the island from Bangka, it was called " Amat" by its close relations. Aidit receives a Dutch education. It joined Indische Sociaal-Democratische Vereeniging or ISDV (" social democrat union of Indes"), which will become later the Communist party indonésien.

During the period of confrontation (1945-48) between independent Indonesia and the Netherlands, old colonial power, bursts in 1948 in Madiun, in the east of Java, an insurrection. Although the PKI denounced rising and calls with the calm one, the army supports that he proclaimed a " Soviet republic of Indonésie". The army indonésienne enters Madiun. Thousands of frameworks are carried out, including Muso, and 36.000 jetés in prison. Aidit is exiled in China.

Returned to Indonesia, Aidit accepts the ideology of Soekarno. He becomes general secretary of the PKI, which under its direction, becomes the 3rd Communist party of the world of many members, behind those of the China and the Soviet Union. With the elections of 1955, the first of the history of Indonesia, the PKI seems one of the four great parties indonésiens with more than 16% of the voices, almost as much as each one of the three other great parties, PNI and the parties Moslem Masjumi and Nahdatul Ulama. The PKI becomes a counterweight of left to the preserving Moslem factions and the army.

In 1965, the PKI became the greatest political party of Indonesia with 3 million members. October 1st in the morning, an officer of the presidential guard announces with the radio operator being with the head of a " council révolutionnaire" who thwarted a plot against president Soekarno and stopped six generals. Another general, Soeharto, take the head of repression. In forty-eight hours, the rebels are stopped. Soeharto issues the dissolution of the PKI, shown to have fomented the blow. A hunting for the Communists follows which will last of the months and will make between 500.000 and one million died according to the estimates. Aidit takes refuge with Yogyakarta, where it finally is captured and carried out by the army.

A certain number of its writings were published under the title of The Selected Works off D.N. Aidit (2 volumes, US Joint Publications Research Service, Washington, 1961).
