Ahura Mazda
Ahura Mazdâ (of the Old man-Persian Will have-Mazdâ , “Lord-Wisdom”) is the abstract and transcendent divinity Zoroastrisme. According to the Avesta, it is the supreme Spirit which gave rise to two opposite principles: Spenta Mainyu (the Holy Spirit or the good choice) and in Ahra Mainyu (the bad choice). If Ahura Mazdâ transcends the elements of physical creation, it does not remain about it less the Pole of the essential Light, the father of Atar expressed by the paramount Fire which is the fulgurating light, any metaphysics, but which precedes and generates the celestial illuminations of solar and stellar fires of cosmos.
In the Zervanisme, Ormuzd (AuhrMadzd or Ormudz, contraction pehlevienne of Ahura Mazdâ) and Ahriman (contraction pehlevienne of Ahra Mainyu) are dominated by Zervan (it time-without-terminals). Ormudz is the adversary of Ahriman, the representation zoroastrienne of the evil. It is carrying the arta , i.e. wisdom and the truth.
The winged disc represented opposite is present on many low-reliefs of the royal city of Persépolis, just as on the seals achéménides. Its identification with Ahura Mazda nevertheless is discussed. According to Paul de Breuil, it do not represent Ahura Mazdâ, but Farvahar, the fravarti (the Angel) which is in the sphere of the Sun. One sees there a priest of Mardouk, bearded and vêtu with the vedic mode, outgoing with half-length of the winged solar disk.
In the Persian Empire
In the inscriptions of Darius I {{er}}, sovereign of the Persian Empire, it is indicated like “largest of the gods” and is generally called upon only. He is regarded as the source of the royal capacity. Sometimes Persians and the Greeks compare it to Zeus: thus, the “crowned tank of Zeus” evoked by Hérodote (VII, 40), Xénophon ( Cyropédie , VIII, 3,12) or Fifth-Curce (III, 3,3) is actually devoted to Ahura Mazda.
