Ahmed Yassin

Ahmed Yassin , born at the end of the Years 1930, was the founder and the spiritual leader of the Palestinian islamist group Hamas.

Almost blind man, it was tetraplegic and moved in wheel chair since an accident to the 12 years age. Leader emblematic of the islamist movements, his influence and his popularity were increasing as from the years 1980 and Yassin became a personality likely to be opposed to Yasser Arafat and PLO and so to constitute an objective ally of Israel.

Adversary of the Agreements of Oslo and any solution negotiated with Israel, Yassin encouraged the Attack-suicides against the Israeli civilians like responses with the Israeli aggressions in Palestine.

It was killed at the time of a targeted Attaque Israeli during the the Second Intifada, the March 22nd 2004.

He is considered by certain as responsible for died for many Israelis within the framework of attack-suicides.

Youth

Its year of birth is not known precisely, but itself indicated 1938. Yassin was born in the village from Al-Goura close to the town of Ashkelon, but it grew in a camp of taken refuge of the Gaza Strip after its village was destroyed by the Israelis Israeli-Arab Guerre of 1948 which immediately followed the creation of the State of Israel.

Yassin studies at the university Al-Azhar with the Cairo, in Egypt, after having followed a college of mainstream education, in spite of its paralysis following its accident to the 12 years age. This university being a hearth of Islamism and Arab Nationalism, Yassin joined during its studies the movement of the Muslim brothers.

Militancy

Yassin founds the Hamas at the beginning of the the First Intifada in 1987, calling it in the beginning the Palestinian Wing of Moslem fraternity.

Yassin then declares regularly that “the ground of Israel is devoted for the future Moslem generations until the day of the Judgment” and that “this alleged way of peace is not peace and it is not a substitute of the jihad and resistance”.

In 1989, Yassin would have financed the murder of Palestinians which he had suspected of collaborating with Israel. It is also recognized guilty to have ordered the removal and the murder of two Israeli soldiers. It is stopped for these acts and is condemned to the life imprisonment by an Israeli court. It is only this year that the Hamas movement is prohibited by Israel, accrediting the thesis which the Hebrew State would have supported initially its growth to counterbalance the capacity of PLO of Yasser Arafat.

In 1997, Yassin is released from the Israeli prison to be exchanged against two members of the Mossad imprisoned in Jordan following the failure with Amman of an attempted murder of Khaled Mechaal, other directing of Hamas. Yassin is expelled of Israel.

After its coming out of prison, Yassin takes again its role of spiritual leader of Hamas. It immediately takes again its calls to “resistance against the Israeli occupation”, by using tactics including of the attacks commits suicide against Israeli targets, as well military as civil. After being itself opposite a time with the Attack-suicides Palestinian women, it ends up justifying them in 2002, which reveals the first woman-kamikazes.

During the various stages of the “peace process” between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, Yassin is on several occasions assigned with residence by this one. But, each time, it is finally released, often following big demonstrations of its partisans.

Assassination

The June 13rd 2003, of the Israeli sources announce that Yassin “is not protected” from a possible assassination targeted from the Israeli armed . Three months later, the September 6th 2003, a division of F-16 of the Israeli air force launches a bomb of 250 kg on a dwelling of the town of Gaza. Yassin, which was inside the building, is slightly wounded by this attack. The Israeli civils servant will confirm later that Yassin was the target of the attack. Yassin is neat at the Shifa hospital, in Gaza.

After this attack, Yassin declares with the journalists that “time will prove that the policy of assassination will not destroy Hamas. The leaders of Hamas want to be martyrs and are not afraid of death. Jihad will continue and resistance will continue until we have the victory, or we will be martyrs”. Later, Yassin still declares that Hamas will give “an unforgettable lesson to Israel”, in reprisals with this attack.

Finally, Yassin is killed in another Israeli attack, the March 22nd 2004, whereas it leaves a mosque for the first session of prayer of the morning. It is struck by drawn missiles since combat helicopters, and it is killed on the blow; two of its sons are wounded. The attack followed the declaration of Yassin according to which “the response of Israel to the attack-suicide of Ashdod was weak and that thus Hamas will gain in force”.

The attack was regarded as an Israeli revenge against the attacks suicides financed by Hamas. Ismail Haniyeh, then spokesperson of Hamas, made the following statement: “It is the end of which the sheik Yassin had dreamed. ” The direction of Hamas declared that Ariel Sharon “had opened the doors of the hell”.

The majority of the countries, except notable for the the United States, firmly condemned the assassination of Yassin, criticizing its extra-legal character.
