Demeter is a satellite French of observation Géophysique.

It was already observed on several occasions the electromagnetic emissions of waves going until disturbing the Ionosphère during the release of earthquakes. The processes cause some in these phenomena are not elucidated yet. The Demeter satellite conceived by the French CNES and several laboratories which is a micro satellite of 125 kg should make it possible to see there more clearly. It was put on orbit the June 29th 2004 by a rocket Dnepr - LV since the Cosmodrome de Baïkonour.

Demeter, name which evokes the goddess Déméter, is the acronym of Detection off Electro Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions . One of the characteristics of this satellite is the use for the first neuronic time of networks. Another is the use of an old intercontinental missile (SS18, in the name of code Satan, most powerful of the Soviet missiles ) converted into launcher. With the agreements START (Strategic Arms Talks Reduction), this type of missile was promised with breakage, but the researchers offered this other destiny to him in order to reduce their costs. Final, the Demeter mission costs only 17 million euros.

Since a polar Orbit to 710 km of altitude, this satellite must measure during one year, permanently, the electromagnetic signals coming from the Earth and make it possible to check the existence of a correlation with the seismic activity of the ground. It must also provide information on the electromagnetic disturbances related to the human activity.
