Agreements of Locarno

the agreements of Locarno are signed the October 16th 1925 with Locarno in Suisse between representatives of the Germany (Gustav Stresemann), Belgium (Emile Vandervelde), France (Aristide Briand), Great Britain (Austen Chamberlain), Italy (Benito Mussolini), Poland (Alexander Skrzynski) and Czechoslovakia (Edvard Beneš).

The signature of these agreements is the result of the Conférence of Locarno from October 5th to 16th 1925. They officially are ratified with London on February 1st 1925.

1. treaty enters Germany, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Italy = stability pact or Rhenish pact .

These five States guarantee the Western borders (=rhénanes), therefore the status quo . Germany accepts the loss of the Alsace-Lorraine and from the Eupen-Malmedy, at the same time it is protected from a new French and Belgian occupation.

These two conventions give up using the force in the event of a possible conflict between these countries.

4. convention of arbitration enters Germany and Poland

5. convention of arbitration between Germany and Czechoslovakia

These two conventions set up a rather complicated system of arbitration. Germany does not recognize its Eastern borders.

6. France separately signs two treaties of alliance with Poland and Czechoslovakia: each one promises a support armed for the others in the event of attack with Germany.

These agreements seem to found a durable peace. ----
