Agreement of three notes

In tonal harmony, a agreement of three notes is a agreement made of a Fondamentale, a third and a fifth.

One can also say: agreement of three sounds , triad , or, agreement of fifth - more particularly when it is fundamental.

Four species of triads

The third of a triad can be major or minor. Its fifth can be right - it is said whereas one deals with Triad -, but also, increased or decreased.
  • One classifies the triads according to their fifth. When this one is right, the third being able to be major or minor, as one has just seen it, one obtains respectively: the 1st species - major triad - and the 2nd species - minor triad. If the fifth is decreased, the third is minor, and one deals has a agreement of decreased fifth , which constitutes the 3rd species. Lastly, if the fifth is increased, the third is major, and one deals has a agreement of increased fifth , which constitutes the 4th species.

Major triad

The major agreement perfect - or more simply: major agreement - is the first species of the agreement of three notes, composed of fundamental, a major third and a perfect fifth.

Example: C, semi, ground .

Minor triad

The agreement perfect minor - or more simply: minor agreement - is the second species of the agreement of three notes, composed of fundamental, a minor third and a perfect fifth.

Example: C, semi \ flat, ground .

Agreement of decreased fifth

The agreement of decreased fifth is the third species of the agreement of three notes, composed of fundamental, a minor third and a decreased fifth.

Example: C, semi \ flat, ground \ flat.

Agreement of increased fifth

The agreement of increased fifth is the fourth species of the agreement of three notes, composed of fundamental, a major third and an increased fifth.

Example: C, semi, ground \ sharp.

Triads of the seven degrees of the two modes

  • the major range contains three species of the agreement of fifth - but not of agreement of increased fifth:
the major triad, on Ier, IVe and Ve degrees;
  • the minor triad, on IIe, IIIe and VIe degrees;
  • the agreement of fifth decreased, on VIIe degree.
    • the harmonic minor range contains the four species of the agreement of fifth:

    the major triad, on Ve and VIe degrees;
  • the minor triad, on Ier and IVe degrees;
  • the agreement of fifth decreased, on IIe and VIIe degrees;
  • the agreement of fifth increased, on IIIe degree.
    • Examples, in major C and C minor :

    • the same agreement of the one of the first three species, can thus belong to several different ranges.

    a major triad can belong to five different ranges.
  • a minor triad can belong to five different ranges.
  • an agreement of decreased fifth can belong to three different ranges.
  • an agreement of increased fifth can belong only to only one range.
    For example, the major triad C semi ground , can be: Ier degree of the range of major C , Ve degree of the range of major F , Ve degree of the range of minor F , IVe degree of the range of G major , and Life degree of the range of semi minor .

    Triads studied in this article

    • VIIe degree of both modes being regarded as a bad degree - the sensitive not being able to be Fundamental of an agreement, put aside in the particular case of the steps -, the triad formed on this one must be regarded as an agreement of dominant without fundamental . Its study will be consequently approached in the article devoted to with the agreements of four notes.

    Rappelons however that the seventh degree of the minor mode, when this one is a Sous-tonique - and either sensitive -, can with the rigor being real Note of an agreement: this last will be generally employed like agreement of passage.

    • In addition, the agreement of fifth increased located on IIIe degree of the minor mode will be studied in the article devoted to with the inflected chords.

    • Consequently, this article will be exclusively devoted to the three following species: the major triad, the minor triad, and the agreement of fifth decreased located on IIe degree of the minor mode , each one of these species being studied in its three respective states, namely:

    - the fundamental agreement of fifth, or fundamental triad , or agreement of three notes fundamental , or fundamental agreement of three sounds ;

    - the agreement of sixth, or first inversion of the agreement of three notes ;
    - the agreement of quad and sixth, or second inversion of the agreement of three notes .

    the triads major and minor, fundamental or with the state of 1st inversion, are only the stable agreements, except however for that placed on the dominant one which can be regarded as a gravitational agreement because of the presence of the sensitive one. The field and the study of the only stable agreements are often called: “ harmony consonante ”.

    Strategic role of the triads

    All the states of the agreements usable in the two modes are not necessarily employed in as well as strategic agreements.
    • In the following examples, the various agreements are announced as follows:

    * = agreements always being able to be employed as strategic agreements;
    Pa = agreements exclusively employed like agreements of passage;
    PR = agreements having to be preferably employed like preparatory agreements, or else, they can be employed only like agreements of passage;
    NA = agreements having to be preferably introduced by natural sequence - by not of quad or perfect fifth , therefore -, or else, they cannot be them as, employed as like agreements of passage.
