Agni (god)

In the Hindouisme, Agni is one of the principal vedic gods , lord of sacrificial fire and the hearth. In a Hindu marriage, Agni is the principal witness.

Bharata is an epithet of Agni, from which the name comes from India, Bharat, in Hindi and Sanskrit (of Bhatatas, an Aryan tribe).

As a god of fire, it is at the same time the fire of the sacrifice which makes it possible the oblations to be transmitted to the gods, and the fire of the end of time which destroys the world but allows its rejuvenation. By this aspect, it is related to the purification.

Agni is also one of the Dikpala, the guard of south-east.
