In its general direction, the aggregation term indicates the admission to belong to a company or a body. In the education system French, the contest of aggregation , by abuse aggregation , indicates a contest making it possible to recruit the qualified schoolteachers secondary education (“aggregation of the University”) and, in certain disciplines, of the professors of the universities (“aggregation of faculties”).
Aggregation of secondary education
The aggregation of secondary education is, with the contests of the CAPES, CAPET or CAPLP, a recruitment competition of the professors of public secondary education and Private education under contract (in this last case, the prize winner with the contest of aggregation must have chosen beforehand private education under contract at the time of the oral examinations of admission). A candidate with aggregation is known as aggregative . The prizes winner of the contests of aggregation are usually called “aggregate” (and in the past “aggregate from the University”, the " term; Université" indicating at the XIXe century the whole of the State education)
Aggregation, contrary to the CAPES, which goes back to 1950, is very old, and was founded under Louis XV. The first aggregate woman was accepted in 1883.
To present to the external Contest, it is necessary to be titular of a Maîtrise or CAPES/CAPET/PLP, these pre-necessary diplomas being able to be diplomas of other disciplines. Preparations with aggregation are organized in the Université S and the national universities, contrary to the preparations of the CAPES, are managed, at least administratively, by the IUFM. But integration at the universities of the training institutes of the Masters should largely simplify this procedure. The internal Competition is reserved to the professors justifying of at least five years of seniority. Just as for the CAPES, the inscription with the contest itself, which is done near the vice-chancellorship of its academy, is independent of the inscription to the specific training exempted at the approved university. Establishment in the body of the qualified schoolteachers is done after the one year validation of training course.

Aggregation of higher education (Aggregation of faculties)
In certain disciplines (Public law,
Private law and criminal Sciences,
History of the right,
economy,
Management, Political sciences and in the past
Medicine,
Pharmacy), the professors of the universities are recruited by a contest known as " contest of agrégation" allowing the holders of a doctorate to become directly on contest professors of the universities, without passing by the process of the national qualification and the accreditation to supervise research.
The contest of the aggregation of faculties is sometimes discussed, because one sees there a mode of recruitment which would give a too weak share to research and would support the Endogamie (a recruitment restricted with an elite). Certain professors recruited by this skew, generally in the legal disciplines, would immediately give up research to devote themselves to more gainful employments of council for law firms of businesses or members of boards of directors of great groups.
Others, on the other hand, see in this contest the pledge of greatest objectivity in the recruitment of the academics.
History
Aggregation of secondary education
Appeared in
1766, the aggregation of the Faculty of Arts is removed by the Revolution. The aggregate ones are recreated by the decree of March 17th
1808 for secondary education and organized by the statute of the
February 6th 1821, with three specialities: letters, grammar and sciences. Other specialities appear later on: philosophy in
1828, history in
1830, mathematics and physical sciences and natural in
1841. The contest of aggregation is used at the origin to recruit " agrégés" and not of the " professeurs". The aggregate ones of the University are, according to the statute of February 6th, 1821, " civils servant charged to replace the professors, and intended to become professors them-mêmes". Moreover " the places of aggregate are given to the concours" , fixed by the decree of April 10th, 1852 and the payment of February 21st, 1853. Lastly, " all aggregate which would refuse to accept the aucquelles functions it would have been named by the royal council, would lose the treatment and titrates agrégé". They receive, in their simple capacity as incorporated, and until they are named professors in a royal college (college), an annual treatment of 500 francs (Royal decree of January 17th, 1839, article 1). However the aggregate ones acquire little by little the monopoly of recruitment as professors of the colleges, consequently the professors of colleges all of old are incorporated and the two terms merge then. The candidate with aggregation must be bachelor of science or arts. After the university reform of 1966, the diploma for candidater with aggregation becomes the control.
In the beginning, the aggregate ones and professors of colleges teaching in the final and preparatory classes (beautiful letters and special mathematics) were to be doctors science or arts. Nowadays the qualified schoolteachers teaching in the preparatory classes must have only the control, like the qualified schoolteachers teaching in the secondary classes.
The decree of the July 29th 1885 gives its modern statute to the contest of aggregation, with written compositions from 4 to 7 a.m. and oral tests in the form of lessons.
Until 1975, the women and the men presented themselves to separate contests. From 1976 this contests becomes mixed like those of the public office (ministry for the female condition, Francoise Giroud)
Today, there exist many aggregations, so much in matters of mainstream education - among which sporting physical education and, music and visual arts - which in technical matters.
Aggregation of higher education
The contests of aggregation in faculties were created to recruit a category of teachers entitled " incorporated facultés". It is as from years 1960 that the " agrégés" became " university lecturers agrégés" then were integrated in the body of the professors of the universities during his creation in 1979.
Before 1963, the body of “aggregate of the Faculty of Law” was compared to the body of the “university lecturers” of the time. In 1963, the body of aggregate of the Faculty of Law became the bodies of the “university lecturers aggregate of the Faculty of Law” then in 1971 the body of the “university lecturers of legal sciences, policies, economic and of management”.
The aggregation of faculties existed a few years for sciences and the letters and lasting a long time for pharmacy and medicine. It always exists for the right.
The aggregation of medicine was created in 1823 for the recruitment of aggregate in the medical colleges of Paris, Montpellier and Strasbourg. The statute of November 16th, 1874 on the aggregation of Faculties institutes four sections of aggregate (anatomy and physiology; physical sciences; pure medicine and legal medicine; surgery and childbirth). In 1875, the contest becomes national and is intended to provide all faculties and schools, it takes place in Paris. In 1887, the tests of admissibility are fixed in the following way: the subjects are drawn with the fate and include/understand a verbal statement of the titles and work and a lesson of ¾ hour with 3 to 4 hours of preparation. The tests of admission include/understand a one hour lesson (after 24 or 48 hours of free preparation) and practice exams. The thesis of aggregation is removed.
The aggregation of pharmacy, removed in 1968, reappeared of 1995 to 1997.
