Geography

to 12 km upstream of Paris, it only divides with the capital, the characteristic to be located at horse on two banks.

Communes bordering: Alfortville in the North-East, Creteil in the east, Valenton and Villeneuve-saint-Georges in south-east, Orly in south-west, Thiais in the west, Vitry-sur-Seine in western north.

History

Choisy is known only since 1176, like belonging to the seigniory of Thiais, which belongs to the Abbaye of Saint-Germain-of-Meadows. In 1207, the inhabitants are authorized to build a vault dedicated to Saint Nicolas. It is set up in cure in 1224. The existence of a vat on the the Seine is attested as of the end of the 13th century.

In 1678, Anne Marie Louise of Orleans, duchess of Montpensier, buys a house and makes build a castle in Choisy (architect: Gabriel; sculptures of outside: Etienne Hongre). Choisy becomes Choisy-Miss then. She makes rebuild the chorus of the church and repair the nave. The borough is located then only in edge of the Seine.

The population develops throughout the 18th century. In 1738, an inland waterway Paris-Moret, authorized by Michel-Etienne Turgot, provost of the merchants of Paris, serves Choisy per week twice.

In 1739, Louis XV acquires of the castle to have a residence near the Forêt of Sénart where it will drive out and decides that the village will be named from now on Choisy-the-King . The parish draws a large advantage from the presence of the king, who makes increase the old castle and prolongs it by new buildings. Madam de Pompadour is installed there in 1746: the festivals multiply there. Of 1775 with 1780, Marie-Antoinette organizes recreations of all kinds there.

To replace the old village partially included in these transformations, and to make of Choisy a true royal residence, a new village is projected as of 1746. Drawn on an orthogonal screen, it is located between the way of Paris (street of Vitry) and the avenue of Paris. Grounds, of reasonable size, and the hardcores of grinding are given to the inhabitants by Louis XV, in priority with the inhabitants of the old borough like to those related to the royal field by their function. The current streets Louise Michel, Georges Clémenceau, Auguste Franchot and Auguste Blanqui go back to this time. A new parish church and royal, dedicated to Saint-Louis and Saint Nicolas's Day, is high of 1748 with 1760. The old church is demolished in 1759. Of 1748 with 1757 is bored the royal road of Versailles. In 1750, the road of Choisy to Paris is paved. The presbytery is built of 1763 with 1766. Louis XV confirms his presence with Choisy by acquisition in 1764 of the seigniory of Thiais, Choisy and Grignon partly, which it separates into two to resell that of Thiais and Grignon. Little by little the field of the Clothes lines, located at the north of the avenue of Versailles, is also built. The port plays a part of relay between the south of the Paris basin and Versailles. A weekly market is founded. Except the linked activities with the royal presence, agriculture is the principal activity. The population increases regularly since the beginning of the 18th century.

The Révolution has in Choisy the same intensity as in Paris, the mayor of the city maintaining the close links with Robespierre. Danton just like remains in Choisy Rouget of Isle, the author of the Marseillaise. Choisy-the-king becomes the Choisy-on-Seine and the royal field, of which there remains only the entry today, is sold like national good and fall gently in ruin.

From 1809, the bridge of Navier replaces finally the vat. At the 19th century, Choisy the king makes industrial great strides with the establishment of the Faïencerie Boulenger, tilery and crystal manufacture.

A service of slow train in 1829 and a tram line in 1892 connect Choisy to Paris. 1840 sees the arrival of the train to Choisy-the-King with the inauguration of the Paris-Corbeil line which will be the starter of the Paris-Orleans line.

The city undergoes large damage at the time of the combat free-Prussians in an attempt at release of Paris on September 30th 1870.

The town hall, expanding, buys in 1903 the house of Mr. Lagoutte built under Napoleon III in the old large forecourt of the castle. The remainder of the park is parcelled out with construction of the schools in 1910. The allotment of the Red Nest extends to the west from the avenue from the Republic.

In 1913, Choisy-the-King returns under the full glare of the medias with the fine tragedy of Jules Bonnot.

Of 1968 with 1973, Choisy-the-King accommodates the delegation Vietnamese for the negotiations of Paris, originally planned for four months, in the building which was, at the time, the seat of the central school of the French Communist party.

Inheritance and tourist sites

  • Church Saint Louis and Saint Nicolas: Built by Angel-Jacques Gabriel on order of Louis XV to replace the old church, too small and too near to the Seine. The new church was to be the center of the new village projected as of 1746. In 1748, Gabriel gives two projects: the first with a Order Tuscan inside and outside, the second, who was carried out, without this order. The absence of order makes the originality of this church, where the sober monumentality is reached by the work of surfaces. The tower bell-tower is detached on the right from the nave and comprises only two levels (whereas the first project had envisaged three of them). So the bells, very low, do not carry very far, that about which the villagers complained at the 18th century. The anecdote according to which Louis XV would have prohibited the use of the bells is without base (only the Glas was prohibited at the time of the royal stays). The interior of the church shelters two statues of Jacques Rousseau representative Saint Louis and Saint Maurice (1729). The Half dome and the side chapels are decorated with paintings of Jacques Pauthe (1878).
  • Of the Château of Choisy remains only the entry (Saut-de-loup, dry ditch and two houses of guards), which was used for the setting in scene of the town hall, in a park landscape of style Napoleon III, as well as a wing of commun runs (Quoted Anatole-France).
