Aga (Turkish modern: Persan Ağa , : آغا), of Turkish Aga `sovereign chief', `'. Titrate of a civil or military officer, or part of this title. As a title, it was placed after the name of the soldiers or the civils servant of the court which received it.
Military titles
In the
Ottoman Empire, the commanders of the various branches of the military forces were called aghas; e.g. azap Agha, besli Agha meaning commander of Azap, commander of Besli.
This designation was also given to the commanders of smaller units, like the bulyuk and the odzsak.
Civil titles
- the Kizlar Aga was the chief of Eunuques Noirs; Kapi Aga was the chief of eunuques the white, both had very important functions in the Sérail of Topkapi.
- Aga Khan is the title of the leader of the sect Chiite Ismaélien Nizarite. The title Aga Khan is an honorary title which was granted by the king Qajar Fath Ali Shah of Iran has his/her son-in-law Hassan Ali Shah (env.1800-1881), the leader of then of the ismaéliens of Persia.
Other uses
- Aga is a title meaning " monsieur" in Iran.
- Aga is at the same time a title and a family name with the Pakistan and in Afghanistan.
Honorary
Yahya Khan, former president of the
Pakistan, carried also
Aga like titrates hereditary. In the use, the title follows the name.
