Agésilas II
Agésilas II , born in 444, died in 358, king eurypontide of Sparte of 398 to its death. It was one of the largest military chiefs of its time and was famous for its nobility of soul and its courage.
Biography
Wire junior by Archidamos II, it receives the support of Lysandre for évincer its nephew Léotychidès whom it makes declare bastard, and thus succeeds his/her older brother Agis II in 398. He reigns jointly with Pausanias I {{er}} (398 - 395), Agésipolis I {{er}} (398 - 380), Cléombrote II (380 - 371), Agésipolis II (371 - 370) and Cléomène II (370 - 361) of the family of the Agiades.
He makes a brilliant campaign in Ionie against Tissapherne of 396 with 394 and releases the Greeks of Ionie. After its victory over the edges of the Pactole in 395 on Tissapherne it seizes part of the Lydie, Phrygie and arrived until in Paphlagonie.
Recalled urgently in Greece, after the death of Lysandre, to fight against the coalition installation by Athens, Thèbes, Argos and Corinthe it is victorious with Corinthe, Sicyone and especially with Coronée into 394.
During a score of years, it maintains the supremacy of the Lacédémoniens, in spite of a failure in front of Thèbes in 378, until the defeat of Sparte and of the colleague of Agésilas II, Cléombrote II, in front of Épaminondas with Leuctres (371). Beaten once again by Épaminondas with Mantinée in 362, it leaves in 361 in Egypt to help the revolted Egyptians. He dies in 358 with the return of this forwarding.
Plutarque and Cornélius Népos wrote the history of its life and Xénophon made up sound Éloge .
