African party for the independence of Cape Verde
The African Parti for independence the Cap Verde (Partido Africano da Independência de Cabo Verde, PAICV) is a political party capverdien, resulting from separation in 1980 from with the African Parti for independence Guinea and Cape Verde, following a coup d'etat in Guinea-Bissau which deposited the president Luís Cabral, brother of the hero of independence course-verdienne Amílcar Cabral. The PAICV is member of the Internationale Socialist.
After the independence of Cape Verde in 1975, the PAICV directed only the country under a communist system to sole party until in 1990. It was then beaten by the Mouvement for the democracy at the time of the first multi-party elections in 1991.
At the time of the presidential elections of the 11 and February 25th 2001, the candidate of the PAICV, Pedro Pires, was beaten by Carlos Veiga only of 12 votes.
The party gained 52,28% of the votes to the legislative elections of the January 22nd 2006, and 41 of the 72 seats of the National Assembly. Pedro Pires was elected president the February 12th 2006 against Veiga with 50,98% of the votes.
