Darius Milhaud , born with Aix-en-Provence (Rhone delta) the September 4th 1892 and died in Geneva (Swiss) the June 22nd 1974, is a Compositeur French.
Biography
Darius Milhaud was born in Aix-en-Provence, of a father Juif comtadin negotiating out of almonds and of a mother born in Marseilles, resulting from famous the Famille Allatini, Granas established with Salonique. Among the members of its family, it counts Jose de Bérys, Francine Bloch (which will invite it, in 1961, with becoming the first president of the Company of the friends of the national Record library of France and will establish its phonography), Marcel Dassault and Pierre Vidal-Naquet.
He studies with the Conservatoire of Paris with in particular André Gedalge, Paul Dukas and Vincent d' Indy as professors.
He is deeply influenced by the writers Francis James and Paul Claudel and becomes the friend of Léo Latil, a poet who was killed in 1915 at the time of the First World War. During the latter, it is invited by Claudel to become its secretary at the time of a consular mission to the Brésil. Its stay will inspire several of its works of which its Bœuf on the roof .
Of return to Paris, it meets Jean Cocteau and Erik Satie, then constitutes with other musicians the Groupe of the Six.
At the time of the Second world war, it takes refuge, because of its origins, with the the United States where it finds, with the assistance of the leader Pierre Monteux, a post of teacher in California, that it will preserve until in 1971.
Of his wife Madeleine Milhaud, who is also her German cousin, it has a son, Daniel.
He dies on June 22nd, 1974 in Geneva.
Musical work
Particularly vast (443 numbers of opus), its work approaches all the kinds: opera ( Christophe Colomb ), Cantata S, Ballet S ( the Creation of the world ), Symphony S, Chamber music ( Scaramouche for two pianos ) and Film music.
It takes as a starting point the musics of Provence, Jewish, Brazilian but also of the Jazz.
He was member of the Groupe of the Six of which he illustrated esthetics with the Ox on the roof .
