Afgedamde Maas

The Afgedamde Maas or barred Meuse is a Rivière Dutchwoman between the provinces of the Gueldre and the Brabant-Septentrional .

Geography

This river corresponds to an old arm of the Meuse. It starts behind a artificial Isthme, making stopping, in the west of Well. Its end is at the Confluent with the Waal, where the higher Merwede begins, between Woudrichem and the Château of Loevestein. Close to Wijk in Aalburg, Afgedamde Maas is connected to the Bergsche Maas by the Canal of Heusden.

The River navigation on Afgedamde Maas makes use of the Wilhelminasluis close to Giessen, only the lock of the Netherlands with which the walls are equipped with grass.

The water of Afgedamde Maas is also useful like Drinking water for some 530.000 hearths, after treatment.

History

In 1904, a stopping was built between Well and Poederoijensehoek, on the basis of project launched in 1848. The water of the Meuse was evacuated via the Bergsche Maas, dug for this purpose. August 18th, 1904, the queen Wilhelmina inaugurated a memorial of this event.
