Affari Your is a Encyclique of Leon XIII addressed to the Canadian episcopate the December 8th 1897 on the Question of the schools of Manitoba. The Latin title of this encyclical means By addressing to you.

The pope starts by pointing out the religious heat of his brothers bishops, and especially that of François of Laval, vicar apostolic of the News-France. He congratulates his Canadian fellow-members for quality on catholic education in the country, in particular with the Université Laval.

Leon XIII writing which it follows with as much interest the legislative topicality of the Manitoba. This province had indeed promulgated a law which abolished the Catholic schools of French language.

The pontifical opinion is that is a bad law and that the catholics must continue to require a formation which is in harmony with the scientific instruction and the needs for the community.

The pope affirms that the school choices concern the families instead of raising in the State. He also recognizes the imperfect character of the Compromis Bay-tree-Greenway.

The encyclical is concluded by a call with the respect and the unit. A apostolic Bénédiction is addressed to the bishops, to the Low-clergy and to the flocks of Canada

“The act of union to the Confederation had ensured the catholic children the right to be high in public schools according to the regulations of their conscience: however, this right, the Parliament of Manitoba abolished it by a contrary law. It is a harmful law. Because being it would not know allowed our children to go to require the benefit of the instruction of schools which are unaware of the Catholic religion or which fight it positively, at schools where its doctrines are scorned, and its repudiated basic principles. ”
