Afa

Afa is a common French, located in the department of the Corse-du-Sud and the Corsica area .

Geographical location

The village of Afa is located at a dozen kilometers of Ajaccio. It counts four hamlets: Piscia rossa, Pastriccialene, part of Baléone and the center of Afa. D' Afa one sees the rock of Gozzi, mythical rock high of 708 meters. Afa has its elementary school and nursery school with a canteen. There are seven classes with the primary education and two classes for the nursery school, which makes in very nine classes and approximately two hundred pupils. The school of Afa was inaugurated in 1988 by Lionel Jospin which was at the time minister of state education.

The town hall of Afa at summer restored six years ago. There is in front of the town hall a war memorial carried out by a native sculptor of Afa No5el Bonardi of which we find the statues in the four corners of Corsica and who has even his own workshop with Afa. You will be able to see some of its sculptures in the photo gallery. The mayor of Afa names Pascal Miniconi. In Afa there is also a pharmarcie, a dentist, nurses, doctors who are installed in a medical block which hardly goes back to approximately 8 years. In the center of the village we have the very beautiful church which has approximately a hundred years. We can reach Afa by two entries: that of Baleone then that of Mezzavia.

History

In the beginning the village of Afa was a hamlet of the commune of Bocognano. In 1852 the commune of Afa was created thanks to the ground abandonment of Sarrola, Mezzana and Alata. The first mayor of Afa was called Carlo Calvelli and was elected of 1852 until his death in 1858, at the 48 years age. The village was populated by the shepherds of Bocognano at the time of transhumances for the ewes. Therefore the old families of Afa are originating in Bocognano. The summer, much of Afaiens find themselves in the village of Bocognano.
