Aethelheard

Aethelheard , also known under the names of Ethelheard or Æþelheard , was King of Wessex of 726 with 740. Perhaps he was the brother-in-law of his predecessor, Ina of Wessex, but its ancestors are unknown, except for his father, Henry de Somerton.

When Ina abdicates and leaves to Rome into 726, it does not leave particular instructions and according to Bède leaves simply its kingdom “to the younger men”. After its departure, the Western Saxon throne is disputed by Aethelheard and another applicant, Oswald. Oswald seems to have the best arguments, considering the Anglo-Saxon Chronique regards it as a descendant of the king Ceawlin of Wessex, but Aethelheard carries it. It is possible that its victory is due using Ethelbald de Mercie. However, the lack of independence of Aethelheard does not seem to have prevented Ethelbald from taking in 733 a considerable share of the territory of Wessex, including the royal manor of Somerton .
