History

The aerodrome was created in 1912 to be used as a basis for the 1st battalion of the royal air forces of Bavaria ('' 1. Königlich Bayerisches Fliegerbataillon''). Another detachment was on the aerodrome of Gersthofen/Gablingen. Because of proximity of the Castle of Schleissheim, the buildings were set up in a sober regional style (" reduzierter Heimatstil").

After the First World War, the aerodrome was used by the civil aviation until in 1933. It first of all served basic technique for the civil traffic under development and as from 1927 primarily for the formation of the pilots.

After the seizure of power by NSDAP it was transformed into military air base of the Luftwaffe. The construction of the buildings was entrusted to architects of the school of architecture of the post office ('' Postbauschule''). This unusual style for the period Nazi E is also called “Bavarian modern”. The building of the direction of the flights which still exists is the prototype even of this architectural style used by Luftwaffe.

In 1938 was created in the southern part the flying school of Schleissheim. The buildings of the school being used as residences were used of 1945 to 1954 by UNRRA like camp for Displaced persons (DP or `' displaced let us persons'') under the name Schleissheim-Frauenholz.

In 1943, a headquarters (code name'' Minotaurus'') for the drives out day and of night in the airspace of the south of Germany was installed in a bunker. This bunker was dynamited in 1971.

A prison camp of war was installed in the south-eastern part of 1939 to 1946. This camp first of all lodged under command of Luftwaffe prisoners of war French, then Russian then after the war (under American command) former members of the S. In the vicinity in the Hochmutting property an appendix of the Concentration camp of Dachau was. Eleven prisoners belonging to teams of bomb disposal expert-bomb disposal experts of bombs were interned there. . Of 1945 with 1947, the aerodrome was used by the Occupation Air Force (OAF) of the U.S. Army off Occupation, then by USAFE (United States Air Forces in Europe) and of 1947 with 1973 by the US Army. It was then its base of the light aviation of the Army ( Heeresflieger ) of the Bundeswehr of 1958 with 1981. This last year marks the end of the military use of the aerodrome.

In 1964, the old police force of the borders ( Bundesgrenzschutz ) become today Federal police ( Bundespolizei ) there made come the southern flotilla installed since 1962 to Rosenheim. In 1981, this flotilla occupied the halls given up by Bundeswehr.

During some time, the helicopters of rescue (MEDEVAC) of automobile club German s.t.o.l and Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) also used this aerodrome as second base in Munich.

Its name since its creation in 1912 until the departure of the American troops in 1973 had been'' Flugplatz'' (aerodrome) or Fliegerhorst (air base) then'' Airfield'' of Schleissheim. It is only Bundeswehr which used name Flugplatz Oberschleissheim still into force'' today. In the language running one will make however the economy of the prefix “Ober” to say only Schleissheim.

In addition to the old workshops ( Flugwerft'' = aeronautical building sites), the two baptized halls Junkers hallen and halls 1 and 2 are classified historic buildings.

Activities present

The aerodrome is used by six aero clubs and the Federal police (flotilla of Germany of the south). The organization responsible for the aerodrome is association " Flugplatz Schleissheim e.V." , created in 2001 for chapeauter six aero clubs.
