Adverb

In Grammar, one calls adverb a category of Mot, or a segment (adverbial phrase) which associates with a Verbe, with a Adjectif or another adverb, to modify of it or specify the direction of it. Example: quickly .

One also includes in the category of the adverbs of the segments which do not answer this definition, like yes , not , perhaps (adverbs modalisateurs), here , etc

  • Generally invariable, the adverb constitutes the core adverbial Syntagme:

In accordance with its promesse, it arrived per hour.
the adverbial syntagm “ In accordance with its promise ” (which supplements the verb “ arrived ”) has as a core the adverb “ Conformément ”.

  • the adverb is a lexical category (a full word ) as well as the Nom, the Adjectif or the Verbe. But by the fact that it is invariable , and by its faculty with to combine with the function words to form various phrases, it is at the border of the word full and the link-word .

  • It can often be comparable with a circumstantial complement:

It works avec courage. /He works courageusement.
the noun phrase “ with courage ” is circumstantial complement in manner of the verb “ works ”. The adverb in manner “ courageously ” supplements the verb “ works ” (or: circumstantial complement in manner of this same verb).

  • Certains adverbs can be referential representatives or textual representatives, as well as the Pronom S. It is the case for example, some adverbs of place ( here, there, elsewhere …) and some adverbs of time ( today, tomorrow, yesterday …) :

As I was sick, I remained dedans.
the adverb “ inside ” returns to “ in my house ”, “ at home ” referential.
Christophe was born in Montreal. Là-bas, the winters are more rigorous than in France.
the adverb “ over there ” represents “ Montreal ” textual. The enonciator is obviously far from this city at the time of the stating.
