Comment

The film swarms with ideas and an expansion of colors chatoyantes due to the French director of the photograph Georges Périnal. Humor is omnipresent and the two malicious ones will not frighten the toddlers contrary with much of fairy tales which are often disadvised to them because of terrifying representations of the evil. The scenes of battles between malicious and nice are laughing thanks to the clever sound effects undoubtedly drawn from the Comic S of the Années 1950: the expensive boiiiiinnnggg, wizzzz, vlooop with Gainsbourg titillate the large belly and posterior unpleasant Anthony (Peter Sellers, future Clouseau inspector of the pink Panther ) like the splatch, ace, bang which estourbissent its assistant Ivan (Terry-Thomas, future “Big moustache” of the Great Ramble ). Their tandem points out that of Laurel and Hardy. The music and the songs, omnipresent are astonishing by their diversity: waltz, jazz even mambo. But the magic direction of George Pál is strongly amplified by the prowesses of the hero, Tom Pouce, alias Russ Tamblyn (future Rif, “chief of the Jets”, West Side Story ). Become russet-red for the circumstance, Russ incarnates an goblin at the same time malicious and naive and it is the sheer delight of film. Beginning with the cinema at 14 years, it seems broken with all the disciplines. The choreography where he dances with his paper double is one great moment of anthology of the cinema (or of happiness). Singer, dancer, acrobat, one expects to see Russ flying away as Peter Pan but he will not imitate it. The magic operates thanks to its only talent (without faking); it is a poetic Tom Pouce, pure spirit of before numerical, in turn the leaping heart insufflating the life with its toys or child dreamer calming down with the song of “Mr Bâillement” (voice of Stan Freberg) who, him, despite everything its efforts, will not succeed in deadening the spectator…
