Advanced vocational diploma

The advanced vocational diploma or BTS is a national diploma of the French higher education, created in 1959. It prepares normally in two years after obtaining the baccalaureat in a section of high-level techniciens (STS). It is a diploma of level III. Obtaining the diploma is done on examination. With the difference in the baccalaureat there is no test of correction for those which obtain a note slightly lower than the necessary average (10/20), but a simple commission allowing the correction of the students close to the average.

It prepares with the choice:

by the traditional school way in a college or establishment of private education, throughout one two year, after the baccalaureat,
by alternation of periods of training in training center and activity paid in the company,
by the way of continuing education with possibility of profiting from the Validation of the Assets from the experiment for whole or part from the tests from the examination associated with the diploma. This way requires to have 3 years of experience professional of the level of the diploma concerned.
by correspondence via the Cned, it will be enough to be registered with the vice-chancellorship at the time of the second year to pass the examination, the Cned being different in particular by the absence from numerus clausus and freedom from training. It is also possible for certain formations to select the matters in particular within the framework of a combination with the Validation of the Assets of the experiment.

There exists more than one hundred of tertiary, industrial or agricultural specialities (then called BTSA and depend on the ministry for agriculture). Certains BTS proposes options in 2nd year (for example for hotel trade or the business computing).

Like all the students, the pupils of BTS have access to the purses of higher education, the housing of CROUS and the University canteen.

If the BTS remain average a rapid to reach a professional qualification, the Réforme LMD encourages the holders of BTS to continue their studies in particular until in professional license. Obtaining the advanced vocational diploma carries the acquisition of 120 European appropriations (ECTS).

Outlets

This diploma is intended for the entry in the working life, but a continuation of study can be considered (this one relates to however only approximately a third of the pupils, against more half in HAD). The acquired BTS, the student can sometimes make a third year of specialization which is equivalent to a license, in particular with the multiplication since 1999 of the openings of formation of the type professional License.

The best of them can continue in schools of engineers, Universités or IUP, sometimes via preparatory classes of adaptation for high-level technicien.

Formation in College

The establishments recruit according to these lists and of the school records of the candidates. The notes of first and final are taken into accounts thus that the appreciations of the teachers. For certain sections, a maintenance or a Covering letter is also required, although legally the selection can be done only on file, the selection by maintenance being of a debatable nature juridically. The rejection of a candidature following a maintenance can be the subject of a recourse in front of the Administrative court, recourse normally satisfied (constant jurisprudence). Nevertheless the recourse to these talks is often founded from a point of view teaching and technical (the files are sometimes insufficient to evaluate the aptitude of the candidate correctly to integrate the formation) and the fact of integrating a formation - a fortiori following a recourse in front of the Administrative court - does not guarantee the success with the examination. Students of Universities, IUT, schools of engineers, etc, which want to change formation, can also present themselves to it. Since the re-entry 2006, the admission is of right for the candidates provided education for in section of professional vat of the professional field corresponding to the required BTS and which obtains with the professional vat the mention well or very well.

The BTS is more particularly intended to the high-school pupils having followed technological studies or professional. It is during in the higher education of the BEP in secondary education.

The environment is close to the years of college, from the place of teaching, the number of pupils per class and the workload.

Lawful context

All the BTS are organized around the same general payment defined by decrees.

The contents of the formation of each speciality are worked out by a Joint advisory Committee which bring together employers, paid and public authority. First of all the community activities are defined to which the technician will deliver itself. From that, the reference frame of certification of the diploma is established to define the associated capacities, competences and knowledge. The situations of evaluation are proposed through a payment of examination. Of another elements are also defined such as the weekly schedule of formation under school statute. This information is gathered in a document called downloadable reference frame in particular on the site of the teaching National center of documentation (www.cndp.fr). The candidates can also obtain from the direct aid of professors teaching in BTS on the Forum of the BTS

The candidates generally pass the examination in its total form (all tests at the time of the same exam session). In the event of failure, they have the possibility of preserving the notes of the examining units higher or equal to 10 at a later session and of thus passing by again only the examining units where they had not obtained the average.

The course of formation integrates periods of in-company training.
