Adrien V

Adrien V (Ottobono de' Fieschi) (v. 1205, Genoa - August 16th 1276, Viterbe) is pope during 36 days, of the July 11th to the August 18th 1276.

Biography

Named pontifical chaplain in 1243; it is created cardinal-deacon under saint-Adrien in 1251, by his uncle, the pope Innocent IV. It is named archdeacon of Parma at that time and is archdeacon of Rheims in 1251.

In 1265, the pope Clément IV sends it on mission in England to reconcile Henri III and its barons, and to preach the Croisade there. It remains in England until in 1268 like pontifical Légat.

Elected official pope in 1276, whereas it is only simple Diacre, it does not have time to be ordered priest and bishop and thus will not be established on the pontifical see. He is however regarded as legitimate pope.
