Adrien Baillet (June 13rd 1649 with Neuville-in-Hez - January 21st 1706 with Paris) is a theologist and French man of letters.
Its life and its work
Resulting from a poor family, it makes her studies with the seminar of Beauvais, then teaches humanities there. Ordered priest in 1676, it is cleaned of Lardières, then canon of Beaumont-les-Nonains. Dissatisfied of this life, it goes to Paris where it finds a post of librarian near prosecuting attorney Chrétien François de Lamoignon. Insatiable reader, it acquires a vast knowledge while establishing the reasoned catalog of the library in 32 volumes. He then puts himself to produce works of scholarship, devoted for the majority to the history and the religion. Its Jugement of the scientists causes some movements because considered to be too favorable to the theses Jansenists. Its contentions with the Bollandistes still take a more serious turn when it is allowed to question the dogmas (not yet proclaimed by the Pope at the time) of the Immaculate Conception and the Assomption in one entitled book Dévotion the Virgin , which is promptly put at the Index. Most of its Vies of the saints will also know the same fate, because by drawing aside all the miracles which do not appear to him not proven, it approaches too dangerously the doctrines reformists.
Of health poor and weakened by an excess of study and austerity, it prematurely dies out in 1706.
