Peter Gabriel is a British musician born the February 13rd 1950. He initially knew the celebrity as a member of the group of progressive Rock Genesis, but he had then long and prolific career solo after his departure of the group in 1975 leaving the place of principal singer to the beater Phil Collins. Peter Gabriel is also a producer of discs on his label Real World. He since many years is implied in various humanitarian associations.

Biography

Genesis

Gabriel founds Genesis in 1967 whereas it is still at the school with Tony Banks, Anthony Philips, Mike Rutherford and the beater Chris Stewart. In love with Drunk music, Gabriel develops its style under the influence of Nina Simone, Gary Brooker, Procol Harum and Cat Stevens.

Genesis quickly becomes an internationally known group, in particular because of the services blazing of Gabriel on scene, which comprised many changes of strange costumes and stories told on scene before each song.

Career solo

Following tensions within Genesis, in particular because of “invading” personality of Peter Gabriel who felt on the other hand with narrow, and not to explode the group, this one decided to leave Genesis before even the launching of the round of The Lamb Dregs Down one Broadway which it however ensured until the end. Solsbury Hill , its first success solo, is an autobiographical piece relative in its frame of mind at the time of its departure of Genesis.

This title marks also the arrival of Gabriel in the era of the video Clip on MTV, of which it gains besides nine of the rewards in 1987. Two albums studio will follow, but also of the film musics, multimedia projects (from which two interactive games will be drawn on computer), a participation in the spectacle of the millenium in London, and especially of collaborations with artists of all horizons.

Gabriel was interested for a long time in the World music, with a first musical proof on its third album. This influence increased with time and it is one of the pillars of the movement WOMAD. It created the studios then the label Real World with Bath with the the United Kingdom to facilitate the creation of this kind of music by various artists and contributed to make known people like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Youssou Dour.

It is concerned of long time by the problems of the human rights, going until taking part during more than one year in a world tour in the profit of Amnesty International and creating its song Biko , in homage to Steve Biko, almost always played at the time of its concerts since. In the same way, it took part in the album Sun City against the Apartheid on the initiative of Steven van Zandt. Becoming aware after the business Rodney King of the role of the image in this fight, it also launched the program “Witness” which provides video cameras to the organizations of defense of the human rights to make known the abuses.

Many artists paid homage to Peter Gabriel by taking again some of its compositions, the such British duet Erasure which made an electronic resumption of Solsbury Hill in 2003.

The February 10th 2006, Peter Gabriel interpreted the song Imagine John Lennon at the time of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics of 2006, with Turin.

The November 17th 2006, Peter Gabriel was indicated “Man of peace 2006” at the time of a top of prizes winner of the Nobel Prize.

Beginning 2007, it stated to want to only produce its new opus, without the assistance of a recording company. For that, it began a lifting of funds. June 2007, it decides to make a mini round named Warm up summer turn (22 dates) through Europe. At the time of the 80 years of Nelson Mandela, it takes part in the development of a newsgroup for peace in the world. Among his members, one finds the former president of the the United States Jimmy Carter like Sir Richard Branson, Desmond Tutu,… He takes part with David Rhodos and Richard Evans in the original soundtrack of the film sea monsters of Geographic National. He will receive on October 16th, 2007 a BMI icon and on January 28th, 2008 will be honoured with a MIDEM, price decreed by the industry of the disc. One can estimate today that it sold 40 million albums (career solo).
