Adria
Adria is an Italian commune of the Province of Rovigo in Venezia.
History
Adria (or Hadria or Atria) were founded at sixth century BC, by the Étrusques; it was, at the origin, on the coast even of the sea of which it was the principal access point for the latter and to which it gave som name: the Adriatic Sea (however, the ancient geographer Strabon sees rather a river “Adrias” like the origin of the name Adriatique); by the effect of the alluvial deposits of the Po and Adige (see the Delta of Po), it is today with approximately 18 kilometers. The habitat itself is rather badly known: the major surveys revealed the presence of houses on palafittes. The necropoles (Channel Bianco, Piantamelon…) are on the other hand well-known and delivered tombs of 4th-2nd S. which attest the persistence of an Etruscan settlement in the area, as well as the presence in the town of populations of origin vénète or Greek. The Gaulois seized some at fourth century BC; the city becomes then a Roman Municipe, in 289 av. J.C under the name of Hadria according to Tite-Live.
In 1382, Clement VII, pope of Avignon, imagined to create in favor of Louis of Anjou a Royaume of Adria, formed at the expense of the Papal States, and composed of the Romagna, the Marches and the duchy of Spolète, but this project did not have execution.
