Adrar of Ifoghas

The Adrar of Ifoghas is a mountainous solid mass located at the North-East of the Mali. It belongs to the principal mountainous solid masses of the the Sahara, with the Aïr, the Hoggar and the Tibesti.

The inhabitants of Adrar of Ifhoghas, name the Kel Adagh, the term Kel Ifoghas specifically referring to the members of the tribe of Ifoghas.

Its surface corresponds to half of France, that is to say roughly 250.000 km ². The area is strewn with granitic stackings in the forms of very eroded blocks. The valleys broad and are boxed little there; they open in the east on the plain of Tamesna, in the west on the ditch of Telemsi, in the south towards the Western basin of Azaouak and in north on the Tanezrouft.

The original name of Adrar of Ifoghas is Adagh (the mountain). This name was allotted by the French colonial administration to avoid by its troops a confusion with Adrar in Mauritania which was also occupied by France. This mountainous solid mass located in full heart of the Sahara accommodates an important population touarègue, the mountains playing in the desert the part of well.

In Tamasheq, Adrar means mountain. As for the word ifogha , it comes from the aristocratic clan Tuareg " Kel Ifoghas" who exerts since several generations a prevalent political role in the area. They are stockbreeders of camels, goats and sheep of which they make the trade.

Adrar of Ifoghas is rich in rupestral engravings and one finds there many Guelta S.

It is an area appreciated for the treks.
