Culture

A light and healthy ground is appropriate for the culture of the adonis, that it is necessary to disseminate in the plat bands. Sowing, this Plant being annual, is the only mode of multiplication. One can carry out it in September if one wants to have flowers from May to June; from in May March to obtain a flowering a little later of in July June. The seeds also frequently resow themselves.

One of the great merits of the adonis, it is to be able to continue to flower in the Eau or the wet ground when its stems were cut. These last are preserved during several days. “In spring, learns to us Mr. de Vilmorin, as soon as the first flowers are shown, the gardeners cut the branches, join together them in bouquets which they then plant in very small pots; the flowers open out successively and in great number at the same time. Treated thus, the adonis blood drops forms small potfuls which can be used for the ornament of the windows and apartments. ”

Other cultivable species

The adonis of spring ( Adonis vernalis ) is another species of the same kind, but differing clearly from the preceding ones by its long-lived vegetation, its very broad noirâtres roots, its flowers, with very many petals, yellow lemon outside, sharp and shining inside. It is one of the best plants than one can seek to decorate the rocks. In a wild state, it is extremely rare in France and localized on some points of the Lozere, of the Aveyron, the Gard and the Alsace. The adonis of the Pyrenees ( Adonis pyrenaica ), also with flowers yellow and endemic of the chain of the the Pyrenees, behaves in the same way.

These two plants are liked in the ground of coarsely crushed heather. The multiplication is made sowing out of ground of heather of April-May and pots. One mends and one sets up at the Automne or the Printemps. One can also divide the stocks at the end of several years, in spring, or burst them with the autumn.

Toxicity

The adonis of summer is very toxic. It contains a poison called adonidotoxine accompanied by a coumarinic derivative called vernadin. Introduced fresh, it causes violent one colics and a rebellious diarrhea with any treatment. The exit of this intoxication is generally death by exhaustion.
