Biography
In 1695, Adolphe-Frederic II of Mecklembourg-Strelitz required the succession of his/her father-in-law Gustave de Mecklembourg-Güstow, but it could not carry out this project. After long negotiations, the May 8th 1701, the attestation of inheritance of Hamburg granted the duchy of Mecklembourg-Strelitz to him, it became duke of Mecklembourg-Strelitz. The duchy of Güstrow was thus divided between the line of Mecklembourg-Schwerin and the line of Mecklembourg-Strelitz. Adolphe-Frederic II of Mecklembourg-Strelitz accepted the principality of Ratzebourg, the territory of Stargard, the towns of Mirow and Nemerow. These various territories formed the duchy of Strelitz.
Adolphe-Frederic II of Mecklembourg-Strelitz was regarded as a far-sighted sovereign, dice 1706, it gave his orders concerning his succession to the ducal throne by designating as his heir his son Adolphe-Frederic III to Mecklembourg-Strelitz.
Adolphe-Frederic III of Mecklembourg-Strelitz was the founder of the line of Mecklembourg-Strelitz.
He held a big role in the propagation of the Protestant Reform in the Germanic Roman Holy roman Empire at the 16th century, he was also the ally of the Protestant Sweden.
Genealogy
Adolphe-Frederic II of Mecklembourg-Strelitz belongs to the third branch (Mecklembourg-Strelitz) resulting from the first branch of the Maison of Mecklembourg. This third line died out in 1996 with died of the large-duke Georges-Alexandre de Mecklembourg. Georges Borwin is the current one claiming with the succession.
