Marriage and descent

In 1709, Adolphe-Frederic III of Mecklembourg-Strelitz married Dorothée de Schleswig-Holstein-Plön (1692 - 1765), (girl of the duke Jean de Schleswig-Holstein-Plön).

Two children were born from this union:

  • Sophie de Mecklembourg-Strelitz (1710 - 1728), it entered the orders and was abbess with the monastery of Rhün

  • Madeleine de Mecklembourg-Strelitz (1711 - 1713)

Biography

Adolphe-Frederic III of Mecklembourg-Strelitz succeeded his father the May 12th 1708. In 1712, the castle of the ducal family of Mecklembourg-Strelitz was devastated by a fire, for this reason, Adolphe-Frederic III of Mecklembourg-Strelitz and its family was in the obligation to lie in a hunting lodge. Around this place, the town of Neustrelitz was rested by the duke Adolphe-Frederic III (1733), this new city became the capital of the principality of Strelitz. Its nephew, Adolphe-Frederic IV of Mecklembourg-Strelitz succeeded to him.

Genealogy

Adolphe-Frederic III of Mecklembourg-Strelitz belongs to the third branch (Mecklembourg-Strelitz) resulting from the first branch of the Maison of Mecklembourg. This third line died out in 1996 with the large-duke Georges-Alexandre de Mecklembourg. Georges Borwin is the current one claiming with the succession of the large-dukes of Mecklembourg.
