Adolph Kolping

Adolph Kolping (born the December 8th 1813 with Kerpen close to Cologne; died the December 4th 1865 in Cologne) was a catholic priest German.

Kolping was raised by his/her father shepherd. At 18 years it came to Cologne as an assistant from shoe-maker. It was shocked living conditions of much of people and then decided to become priest. At 23 years it was accepted with the college and studied then theology with Munich, Bonn and Cologne.

The April 13rd 1845 it was ordered priest in the church “Minoriten” of Cologne. He worked initially in Elberfeld (forming now part of Wuppertal) as chaplain and professor of religion.

In 1847, he became the second president of the catholic Association of the companions (founded the previous year by Johann Gregor Breuer), which gave to the young companions a social security and nun.

In 1849 it went back to Cologne like Vicaire of the cathedral and establishes the association of the companions of Cologne. It links existing associations of companions, such as " Rheinischer Gesellenbund" (" Federation of the companions of Rhénanie") in 1850. This fusion was at the origin of current “the Kolpingwerk”. Until its death it worked to spread out the federations of companions. With its death in 1865, there was more than 400 associations of companions in the world.

In 1854 Kolping the weekly newspaper " founded; Rheinische Volksblätter" (" newspaper of the people rhénan"), which quickly became one of the press agencies of the time having the most success.

In 1862 he became vice-chancellor of the Minoriten church of Cologne.

Kolping mourru on December 4th, 1865. It is buried in the Minoriten church of Cologne. It was béatifié by Jean-Paul II the October 27th 1991.

Today in Germany, the Kolpingwerk (which it founded) has more 275  000 divided members 2  730 local families of Kolping, which makes of it the largest local federation of Germany. Kolpingwerk based in Cologne, has approximately 500  000 members in the world and is organized in close to 6  000 families of Kolping.
