Administrative district of Liege

The administrative district of Liege is one of the four administrative districts of the Province of Liege in Walloon region (Belgium). Its surface is of: 796.87 km ² and its population at the 1/1/2006 rose with: 590972 inhabitants.

The district is also a legal district. This legal district moreover is composed of the communes of Berloz, Crisnée, Donceel, Faimes, Fexhe-the-High-Bell-tower, Geer, Oreye, Remicourt in Waremme (administrative district of Waremme). The commune of Comblain-with-Bridge which belongs to the administrative district of Liege is part nevertheless of the legal district of Huy.

History

The district of Huy was created in 1800 like the first of the three districts of then of the French department of Ourthe. It was composed of the cantons of Dalhem, Fléron, Glons, Herve, Hollogne-with-Stones, Liege, Louveigné, Seraing, and Waremme.

In 1821, the canton of Waremme was withdrawn from the district to form the administrative Arrondissement of Waremme and the canton of Herve was transferred to the district from Verviers. The commune of Comblain-with-Bridge was yielded by the district of Huy.

During the final fixing of the borders linguistics in 1963, the communes of Mouland and Fouron-the-Count were transferred to the district from Tongres n the other hand from the communes from Bassenge, Ében-Émael, Lanaye, Roclenge-on-Geer, Wonck and of part of Sluizen.

In 1965 the communes of Roloux and Voroux-Goreux were yielded to the district of Waremme.

In 1977 the commune of Neufchâteau was taken with the district of Verviers and the communes of Ernonheid, Harzé, Neuville-in-Condroz, Éhein and Poulseur with that of Huy. At the same time the communes of Anthisnes and Engis were yielded to Huy.
