Adium
Adium is a free customer of Instant messaging for Mac OS X which supports many protocols through the libraries Libpurple and Joscar.
Adium is written by using the application program interface of Mac OS X Cocoa, and is carried out under the license Open source GNU General Public License in its version 2.
History
Adium was created originally by Adam Iser, an American student, and its first version, version 1.0 was carried out in September 2001.
The following version - which was to be called initially Adium 2.0, but was re-elected in Adium X - is a complete rewriting of the versions 1.x. The largest improvement was the passage to Libgaim to add the support of other protocols that AIM. The majority of work on Libpurple is made by the team of Pidgin (ex-Gaim), the developers of Adium finding the code of Pidgin too complex and “dirty”; the developers of Adium concentrate on the interface, the heart or the establishment of additional libraries, such as Joscar.
The version which will succeed to him, version 2.0, will be a new rewriting of Adium. It will be made up of two parts: the application it even and a demon, ChatKit, which will take care of the management of the accounts and the protocols. ChatKit will be reusable by other applications, and one will be able to connect oneself to a “waiter” ChatKit preexistent, in room, or remote, on several “customers” ChatKit at the same time.
Finally, following a name change of version, on February 2nd, 2007, a named version “Adium 1.0 appeared”. The last version is “Adium 1.1.4” (November 5th 2007).
