Adirondacks

The mounts Adirondacks , in the State of New York, are a crystalline solid mass which crosses the counties of Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, and Warren. Located in the prolongation of the mountains the Appalachian Mountains, they however belong geologically to the mounts Laurentides of the Canada. They are bordered in the east by the Lac Champlain and the lake George, which separate them from the green mountains (Vermont). The southern limit is consisted the valley of the Mohawk. Beyond the Black river, one finds in the west the plate of Tug Hill, and in north the Fleuve the St. Lawrence. Adirondacks represent a fifth of the surface of the state of New York and account 4000 cours d' water.

Adirondacks culminate with 1629 m with the Marcy Mount (sometimes called Tahawus). One counts 46 tops above 4.000 feet (1219 m). The principal tops are Algonquin Peak (before MT. McIntyre) (1559 m), Haystack (1512 m), Skylight (1501 m), Whiteface (1485 m), Ten (1480 m), and Giant (1410 m).

Geology

The Adirondacks mounts consist of metamorphic rocks, especially of the Gneiss, around a core of intrusive igneous rock, mainly of anorthosite.

These crystalline rocks constitute the southern termination of the Canadian Bouclier, resulting from the volcanic activity of the Précambrien.

The area of Adirondacks was formerly covered by the Laurentien glacier, whose erosion carved the mounts, which have many lakes now.

Tourism

Most of Adirondacks is included/understood in Adirondack State Park, a natural park of 24.000 km ², including 9.300 km ² of forests. One finds there in particular the village of Lake Placid, near the lake of the same name, which accommodated twice the Winter Olympics (1932 and 1980). The area is very tourist, with many stations built around the lakes: Lake Placid, Lake George, Saranac Lake, Schroon Lake and St Governed Lake. One practices there hunting, fishing, the excursion and the winter sports. Between the mounts McIntyre and Wallface, Indian Not, a 18 km long steepsided valley, also attracts many visitors.
