Adessif

In Linguistic, the adessif is the Cas expressing the position in an open place (in opposition to the Inessif) or in the vicinity immediate of something.

Examples:

  • in Finnish, the suffix of adessif is -la/-llä : ikkuna “window” → ikkunalla “with the window”. Note that adessif Finnish corresponds to adessif in Hungarian when it means “near” and with Superessif when it means “on”.
  • in Hungarian, the suffix of adessif is - nál/-nél : has fal “the wall” → has falnál “close to the wall”.
It is not used to express the possession in Hungarian (see this article) whereas in Finnish, this case is also that of the possession: minulla one I has . One could even say that this use takes precedence over the fixed positional direction in the etymology of the name of the case, without one being able clearly to establish the direction of a possible derivation. This relation between two interpretations (surface position and possession) is found with coherence in the close cases, Allatif and Ablatif.
