Biography

Its first unions

When she marries in 982 the young person Louis V (not yet king de France) with Brioude, she is already twice widowed count Etienne de Gévaudan (death into 970) she had children, and of the count Raymond of Toulouse (death in 978). The too great difference in age and the vices of the young husband will be the cause of its divorce in 984.

Its marriage with the count of Provence

It takes refuge with Arles and remarie against the opinion of the pope with the count of Provence, Guillaume in 984. Their daughter, Constance of Arles (986-1032) will be queen of France by her marriage with Robert II in 1003. The couple would have had one second girl, Ermengarde of Arles which marries thereafter Robert Ier of Auvergne. Died of Guillaume in 993, it ensures a long regency which provides to the new nobility the occasion to be raised on several occasions against the dynasty comtale. It must also intervene after the death of the new count Guillaume II killed with the seat of the castle of Fos in 1018.

A fifth marriage?

The assumption of a fifth union of Adelaide of Anjou, widow of the count de Provence, with Othon Guillaume, count de Bourgogne and of Mâcon, was proposed in 1907 by Rene Poupardin and was taken again by other historians with his continuation. This assumption rests only on three Charte S simply attesting the existence of one second wife of Othon Guillaume of the name of Adelaide and a bubble of the pope Benoît VIII addressed, inter alia, with the secular leaders of Burgundy and Provence, among which Othon Guillaume and Adélaïde, without mentioning union between them. This assumption, which does not rest on any decisive proof, is thus to consider with prudence.

She dies in 1026 and is buried with Montmajour, an abbey close to Arles considered at the time as the necropolis of the comtale family of Provence.
