Addu

Addu is the god of the Storm of the people amorrite, of which he is the principal divinity. It generally represents the climatic elements, of which rain. For this reason, it seems a god of the fertility. This aspect is marked by its animal-symbol, the bull. It divides these features with its hanging mésopotamien (Adad), and Hourrite (Teshub). At the time of the files of Ebla (century), the large god of the Storm of Syria is called Adda.

Addu has a large temple with Alep, the capital of the kingdom of the Yamkhad. He is the god-owner of the dynasty which reigns in this city, which is one of most powerful of the Middle East amorrite, and he also seems being provider of the royalty in the close kingdoms, like that of Mari. Its authority thus exceeds its traditional space, the kingdom of Alep. This shows the importance well that took this god at this period. Another place of important worship of Addu was the town of Kalassu, also in the kingdom of Yamkhad. Like the other gods of the time, it could appear with the kings via Prophète S.

An important myth of the time amorrite brings back the combat of Addu against the Sea, Yam, and its final victory, undoubtedly enabling him to ensure its preeminence on the other gods, while being presented in the form of a restorer of the order vis-a-vis Chaos. This account is found at the following period with Ougarit, in the myth of Baal against the Sea, but also in the Enuma Elish , which tells the combat of Mardouk against Tiamat. This mythologème is a symbol of the access to the royalty.
