Adaptive operation
The adaptive operation is the way in which a person adapts to the environmental requirements of the everyday life, and its capacity to reach the standards of autonomy which one awaits from it taking into account his age, of its sociocultural context as well as its environment.
This operation can be influenced by various factors such as the socio-professional education, personality, motivation, possibilities as well as the mental disorders or the general medical problems which often coexist with the backwardness.
Distinction between adaptive skills and adaptive behavior
The concept of adaptive skills is a concept broader than that of the adaptive behavior. The adaptive behavior is the observable behavior, for example to eat an apple, and the adaptive skill appears by the skill to adapt to the various environmental situations. The adaptive skills imply a multitude of competences, they refer to the forces of the person like to her limitations. Indeed, the concept reflects the belief that a person has personal capacities which must be considered compared to its limitations on the plan of its adaptation.
There are 10 specific fields of the adaptive abilities:
- the Communication,
- domestic competences,
- the use of the Community resources,
- the personal care,
- social skills,
- autonomy,
- the Health,
- the Safety,
- functional aptitudes,
- leisures and work.
A person has a deficit of the adaptive skills so at least two of the ten fields show limitations. They are thus conceptual, social and practical abilities.
