Adam Chmielowski
Adam Chmielewski (name of religion: Albert) 1845 - 1916, Polish priest, was the founder of the Frères of the Third-Order of Saint Francois, Serviteurs of the poor .
Biography
Adam Chmielowski was born on August 20th 1845 close to Warsaw.
He was 17 years old when, studying in an agricultural and forest institute, he took part in the insurrection of 1863 - 1864 against the Russianization of the Poland.

It was seriously wounded there with a leg, and had to be amputee.
Following these events, Adam left for France, in order to escape repressions. He made there studies of engineer, but also of painting, giving up his agricultural studies.
Adam returned in Poland in 1873 following the amnesty, and, in front of the misery which it had in front of his eyes, renonça with its career, however promising, of painter, to deal actively of the poor, the abandoned patients and the tramps.
September 24th 1880, it entered to the noviciate of the Jesuits of Stara Wies. But, after one period of doubt, it left the Jesuits and joined the third order franciscain.
It founded a first old people's home to lodge the beggars of Warsaw, and instituted two congregations of tertiary sectors franciscains, one for the men, the other for the women, the Frères of the Third-Order of Saint Francois, Serviteurs of the poor . that one called Albertains of his name in religion, Albert.
At the end of its life, there will exist 21 similar institutions. Currently, there exist 69 foundations of Albertains, 53 in Poland and 16 apart from the country of origin: Argentinian England, , Bolivia, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Italy and the United States.
Having lived like the poor, Adam Chmielowski died in one of the old people's homes which it had founded, the Christmas Day 1916.
Beatification - canonization
- Adam Chmielewski was béatifié on June 22nd, 1983 with Cracow by the Pope Jean Paul II,
- and was canonized on November 12th 1989 with Rome by the Pope Jean Paul II.
- Its festival is the December 25th .
